Protego Nepal Helping Abandoned Kids

Ten years of Civil War ravaged more than rural Nepal: children became the biggest casualty when parents were killed. These kids migrated from countryside to urban Nepal. The children are offered no structured help and are ignored by most of society. Their only options for survival: begging, stealing, and becoming prey to child abusers.

The founders of Protego-Nepal couldn't stand by and watch this happen. Protego-Nepal is an organization dedicated to providing safe houses, education, meals, protection from abuse, and a solid future.

Please keep reading and discover what our organization is doing to help the street children of Nepal.

Nepal's Civil War Wrecked More than the Land

How The Problem of Abandoned Children Began

After Civil War ravaged the countryside for ten years, rural Nepal communities were forever changed. War altered the structure of family life to the detriment of the children. Families were separated, torn apart by both the loss of homes and the destruction of the rural community infrastructure. Homes and businesses were lost. Heads of families were killed or wounded, and the innocent children were left to struggle alone.

Tragically, one generation, with the second emerging, is being lost to child abuse, child labor, and health problems.

Searching for survival, these abandoned and often times abused children gravitated from the countryside to the urban areas of Nepal. Although the countryside has calmed, there are still pockets of resistance and continued sporadic violence outside the cities.

The street kids became an almost invisible minority.

As the number of children grew, they became a more common sight on city streets. While the problem was initially acknowledged, the problems of these children has been ignored.

As the years have passed, this blot on Nepal's streets has become one of quiet acceptance. Those groups who do see the problem are usually International Non-governmental organizations (INGO's) or Nepalese non-governmental organizations (NGO's). Unfortunately, these agencies tend to be shut down for lack of funding or corrupt practices by staff members.

Since these children are usually not acknowledged by society, no real solution is being sought to help them.

To date, there hasn't been any concentrated effort, on a national level, to really address this problem.

Nepal struggles to reform and modernize its infrastructure: gaining adequate electricity (load sharing is practiced), improving communication, and updating road systems. With these vast public work projects, there is no money left over for the abandoned, street kids.

Except for the actions of social agencies in closing corrupt groups, no program is available to help the kids. These children (90% boys and 10% girls) are easy targets to child abusers, who kidnap these vulnerable kids for houses of prostitution in Northern India and Nepal.

Focus on the Street Children in Nepal

How serious is this problem? The numbers, of course, are hard to verify, as these street kids do a good job of losing themselves in the cities and the suburbs. Rough estimations show about 50,000 street kids scattered across Nepal, in every major urban area. In Kathmandu alone, there are approximately 1,800 street kids, and that number will grow by 500 to 1000 or more children by the end of this year.

There are three types of street kids, and they all need help.

* First, those children living with their family on the streets: no home, no education, and improper diet.

* Secondly, those with one or two parents, whose menial jobs keep them homeless: no education and dietary concerns.

* Lastly, and the most unfortunate, those kids who are totally alone: abandoned, abused, no where to go, and nobody to turn to for help.

The children from this last group are the most in need since they have the least access to safety, food, or protection. The kids range from 3-years old and older.

You Can Help The Children of Nepal

Help us save the children of Nepal. In Nepal, there are hundreds of children living on the streets. These abandoned and abused children live and work on the streets and were driven there by political upheaval, domestic violence, and poverty. Over 90% of these Nepalese street children are boys, with no hope of a future other than begging and poverty.

You have a chance to change all that. You can make a difference in their lives.

You can give these children a chance at a better life. Protego-Nepal is dedicated to helping these children by giving them a safe place to sleep, protection from abuse, and by rehabilitating these young lives through teaching them new trades and giving them work.

Remember the saying "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for life?" Protego-Nepal has taken this to heart, and you can help.

Good luck and all the best for this wonderful organization!

*The evolution of culture is ultimately determined by the amount of love, understanding and freedom experienced by its children ... Every abandonment, every betrayal, every hateful act towards children returns tenfold a few decades later upon the historical stage, while every empathic act that helps a child become what he or she wants to become, every expression of love toward children heals society and moves it in unexpected, wondrous new directions.* Lloyd de Mause
