Beyond the Whey Protein Shake

I don't necessarily love whey protein powder. I just love what it can do for my body. Since I don't prefer to eat meat, protein in my diet is often lacking. And since I exercise on a regular basis, my body needs the protein to build muscle.

That's what makes whey protein so special. It's a compact way to get protein into your body. The only problem is, it doesn't taste that great by itself. Here are some recipes on what to do with your protein powder.

Simple Whey Protein Shake

Mix 1 cup of milk with 1 scoop of whey protein powder. I either use a shaker cup or a blender. This is especially good with chocolate whey protein! Add more chocolate syrup of you want to make it extra-chocolaty.

My Favorite Whey Protein Powder

Whey protein is so good for you!

I personally like vanilla protein powder the best - and I believe that whey protein is far superior to soy protein. In fact, soy protein is pretty gross. It has a chalky texture. Vanilla whey protein, however, smells and tastes like vanilla boxes cake mix. So good!

Vanilla whey protein is delicious and versatile. You can blend it into smoothies, add it to oatmeal, or just mix it with milk. All these options are delicious and quite good for you.

How to Use Whey Protein Powder

Tips for protein powder

  • Make a simple protein shake. The first way is to make a simple protein shake. Mix one cup of water or milk with one scoop of protein powder.
  • Make a protein smoothie. Just follow your favorite smoothie recipe and add one scoop of whichever flavor protein powder you like. I use vanilla unless my smoothie involves banana, peanut butter, and chocolate milk.
  • Protein rich oatmeal. Make oatmeal as usual but add one scoop vanilla protein powder when you add the oats. Don't prepare it with milk - just use water. The milk mixed with the protein powder tastes a little funny.
  • Make a simple protein bar. Mix two cups protein powder (I like chocolate for this) with enough peanut butter to make a paste that you can roll into shapes. Simple!

What flavor of protein powder should you buy?

I like vanilla the best because it is most versatile. However, since I am a huge fan of chocolate, I also keep that on hand. But vanilla is most easily blended into smoothies, pancakes, even baked goods.

Things to Do with Chocolate Protein Powder

Try this if you love chocolate!

What can you do with chocolate protein powder? Well, you can do just about anything. It mixes well into baked goods (you can even add it to chocolate cake!). How about making chocolate pancakes or even muffins? You can also make chocolate shakes with milk, protein powder, and ice... In other words, you can do anything as long as the flavors make sense.

Next time you make chocolate muffins or chocolate anything, add in some protein powder. Let me know how it tasted in the comments! I bet you won't even notice and it gives your food a great protein boost.

Whey vs soy protein

My preference for whey protein is from a pure flavor perspective. I have never met a soy protein that I enjoyed. The texture is chalky and the flavors are usually off somehow. For building muscle, I believe whey to be superior anyway. I experimented with different soy protein powders because I am lactose intolerant but I decided to just eat the normal whey protein and take the lactase enzyme separately.
