The protein powder industry has been dominated by the men for years, but in recent years has seen a MASSIVE growth in the number of powders available for women. It is now very common for women to take protein powders but unfortunately a lot of macho male mentality prevails when it comes to good information on protein for women.
If you've asked your boyfriend, husband or just about any other male for information on choosing the right protein powder for women, then you've probably seen the old raised eyebrow, frown and then something along the lines of
"what do you want to take protein powders for?...They're not meant for women, they'll just make you fat!"

Here I'd like to give you some helpful info on what to look for in a protein powder for women and some of my favorite recommendations.

What's The Difference Between Protein Powders For Women and Men?
In principle, there are many similarities, and in many cases women can use the same protein powders as men, and most formulations on the market are designed to be used by both sexes.At the end of the day Protein Is Food - and you don't get food for men and food for women.
However, since men's and women's bodies are different and they develop in different ways, the protein powders designed specifically for women in general tend to contain less protein per serving than those for men.
They will also contain higher levels of vitamins that women need more of, such as:
- Vitamin B6,
- Folic Acid,
- Iron
Protein Isolates such as can be found in Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Protein are a good choice of protein powder for women since they tend to be lower in carbs and fat, and are absorbed quicker in the body. Watch out for the sodium levels in the isolate varieties, as a lot of the better tasting proteins have high levels of sodium.

Can I Use A Women's Protein Powder To Lose Weight?
Yep, you can indeed use the protein powder to lose weight.Most dieting programs recommend having 6 small meals per day of around 300 calories or less. A protein powder for women can come in really handy in such a situation.
The key to choosing a protein powder for women to lose weight is to stick to one that provides you a good amount of not only protein but some carbs, fibre, amino acids, and as little sugar as possible.
Protein powders for women looking to lose weight should contain no more than 7 grams of sugar per portion.
Avoid any that contain preservatives such as potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate.
Also avoid any that contain too many artificial sweetners, or things like Monosodium Glutamate as these can cause you to feel hungry and crave certain foods and sugars.

Ideally, you should be consuming as much of your protein from NATURAL sources as possible as this is the best way to do so for pregnant women. Since pregnant women don't require as much protein as a bodybuilder or someone looking to build muscle, then it should be easier to consume the required amount of protein from natural sources. These should be:
Meat (avoid liver as this contains high amounts of Vitamin A which can harm your baby)
Fish (avoid shark, marlin and swordfish, and limit the amount of tuna you eat - 2 steaks or 4 cans per week, as these fish can contain high levels of mercury which can develop your baby's developing nervous system. This also applies if you're breastfeeding)
Beans and Pulses - (avoid peanuts and peanut products as these can lead to allergies or eczema in your baby)
Eggs- make sure all eggs are fresh and well-cooked so the white and yolk are hard to avoid salmonella. Avoid anything that contains raw eggs, like home-made mayonnaise, ice cream, cheesecake or mousse.
Cheese - stick to hard cheeses like cheddar and parmesan and those made from pasteurized milk like mozzarella and cheese spreads. Avoid mould-ripened soft cheeses like stilton and brie and camembert as these can sometimes lead to Listeria.
Milk - Drink only pasteurized or UHT milk where the germs have been destroyed. If only raw milk is available, make sure you boil it first. Again, avoid any foods made using raw milk like goat's cheese.
I'm Lactose Intolerant - How Can I Get Enough Protein?
Dairy products are a good way for pregnant women to get sufficient protein intake from natural sources.
Use lactose-reduced dairy products so that you can include dairy in your diet.
Also, try to eat plenty of yoghurt - because the bacteria in the yoghurt has already digested most of the lactose in the milk, you should be able to have this product. It is also packed with protein and calcium.
Soy flour is high in protein and can be used if you are doing any baking. Use about a ¼ cup of soy flour for every ¾ cup of normal flour.
Are Protein Powder Shakes OK To Drink During Pregnancy?
If you are already consuming enough protein as recommended by your doctor then consuming more will only cause you to store the extra calories as fat.
If you know that you are not getting enough protein and are very active then a small protein shake should be fine, but you MUST check with your doctor first.
Ideally I would always recommend pregnant women get their required protein intake from natural foods. However, a simple whey protein shake should be ok as long it is natural and does not contain any artificial sweeteners (like aspartame or sucrolose) and other junk to mask the flavour.
At the end of the day, whey is a naturally occuring protein derived from milk so is fine in and of itself...it simply the additives that you need to keep an eye on.
If you're a vegetarian, you can use soy protein powders occassionally, however, there have been some issues with regards to allergies and hormonal problems developing from the use of unfermented soy. Too much is no good for pregnant women. In most cases a little is fine, but as always check with your doctor first.
