Why You Need A Professional Writer
Six Ways A Professional Writer Can Help You Catapult Your Business To The Next Level
Building a business is an exciting, challenging, and sometimes draining process. Sometimes you need help. How can a professional writer help you and benefit your business? A professional writer will:
1. Help all aspects of your business. From product development (i.e. an ebook or a report) and Web content to generating buzz with press releases and article marketing, a professional writer will help you build and expand your business.
2. Save you time. Most people barely have enough hours in the day to get everything done, and many times important projects are neglected or put on the backburner until there is more time. A professional writer will take your project and transform it from an idea into reality.
3. Save you money. If you want high quality writing, you're going to have to pay for it. But, in the long run, you're doing yourself a favor. Hire a professional writer to start rather than hiring someone without the skills to get the job done right the first time. Otherwise, you'll likely be out money when you need to hire a professional writer to redo the work.
4. Help you reach your target market. Chances are you're in a niche that is competitive. As a result, you must have copy and products that stand out. A professional writer knows how to write enticing copy that can help you elevate your business to the next level.
5. Help you generate buzz about your business and your products or services. You must compel your target market to purchase from you. Even if you have the most innovative product or service, your target market isn't going to purchase from you if they don't know you exist. A professional writer will help you generate the buzz you need to be successful.
6. Help you present a professional image. Professionalism counts, especially when you want to stand apart from the competition. A professional writer will ensure that all of your copy is polished and of the highest quality which will, in turn, help you project an image of the utmost professionalism.

Tips For Hiring A Professional Writer
Following are several tips that will help you weed through the pool of potential writers and allow you to choose the best writer for your needs:
Determine the type of writing services you need.
Before you can start your search for a writer, you must know what type of writing services you need. Do you need a skilled Web content writer? Do you need a talented copywriter? Or do you need a stellar press release writer? The good news is many writers specialize in more than one area of writing, so finding one writer for all of your writing-related needs is possible.
Ask for writing samples.
Writing samples are essential. An experienced writer will have a portfolio that contains samples of the types of writing they offer. Read the writing samples carefully: Are they well-written? Are they easy and interesting to read? A professional writer's work will be polished and should already be edited. Writing samples that are littered with errors or that are poorly written are red flags. Avoid writers with poor writing samples.
Ask for references.
Testimonials from current or former clients will give you an idea of how others enjoy working with the writer you're considering hiring and how happy they were with the results of the writer's work.
Don't hire based one price alone.
If you hire based on price alone, you're taking a gamble. There are writers, especially online, who will charge very low rates. Be wary of those writers who charge very low rates; there is likely a reason for it. For example, the writer may be inexperienced and thus unable to produce the quality of writing for which you are looking.
Some new writers will work for lower rates, but you're going to be hard pressed to find a quality new writer who is going for write an article, for example, for as little as four dollars a page. Even new writers often don't offer cutthroat rates.
Be prepared to pay a deposit.
Many professional writers charge a deposit to clients, especially if they've never worked with a particular client before. Be prepared to pay a deposit, but be wary of any writer who asks for 100 percent upfront.
Clearly communicate what you expect from the writer.
Even the most experienced professional writer can't read minds, so it's vital that you clearly communicate what you expect from the writer. For example, if you're hiring a writer to write articles, identify the topic of the articles (be as specific as possible), the desired length of each article, whether you want the articles to contain any keywords, and any other information that you deem pertinent.
Consider writing a project description that details exactly what you need, and be open to any questions and input the writer has for you.
Consider copyrights.
If you want all copyrights to transfer to you after you've made final payment for a project, ensure that you have a document, such as a Work for Hire agreement, stating that.
Have a project agreement written prior to the start of a project.
Always have a project agreement written and signed, by you and the writer, prior to the start of work. A project agreement should include such information as payment, amount of deposit (if applicable), method of payment (i.e. PayPal or check), project description, copyright terms, and due date.
If you've never written a project agreement before and if the writer doesn't provide a project agreement, you can find plenty of boiler templates of project agreements online that you can then customize to your individual needs.

Learning Online: Tips For Choosing An Online Course
Most writers wish to hone their skills, but it can be difficult to carve out time to go to classes at the local university or community college. Regardless of whether it's true or not, online courses seem to have been designed with the writer in mind. Online classes are truly for the independent spirit and the dedicated student. However, online classes-just like classes in a traditional setting-have their pros and cons.
Before you sign up for an online class, ask yourself what you hope to gain from the course. Do you want to get advice on how to move your hopelessly stalled short story along, or do you want to learn the best way to market your business? Once you answer this question, you'll have a much easier time comparing programs and choosing the one that is right for you.
Online courses are offered everywhere-from world-renown universities like UCLA to creative communities like Coffeehouse for Writers. You can earn undergraduate or graduate credit at some colleges and universities while other institutions and organizations might award you a certificate for completing the course.
Flash Orientation: The Ins and Outs of Online Courses
If you've never taken an online course then this section is for you. Let's look at how the Fiction Course at a renowned writer's college worked when I took a course there several years ago.
First things first. All the students of the course were given user names and IDs in order to access the school's website. These were the keys to our virtual classroom that included individual email accounts, a public forum and a private forum. In our virtual classroom, we would exchange ideas, critique each other's work, share our ideas, and ask questions.
Our first assignment was to do an online orientation to allow ourselves to become familiar with the system. We sent introduction emails to the webmaster and learned how to maneuver our way through the classroom. It doesn't matter whether you are computer savvy; the system is as simple as following the basic instructions.
This was my first time working in a virtual classroom, and it was a strange experience at first. It is a very simple process. Our instructor put all of our assignments online. We then completed our assignments and posted them on the main board. Our instructor preferred that we each write "reviews" of the other's work, and he also went through and made in-depth comments.
That's all there is to it. Simple, isn't it? Our instructor would post articles of interest for us to read, and we would do the same. The level of interaction was up to those in the class. That has its benefits but also its drawbacks as our class wasn't very interactive except for the individual critiques.
My advice is before you sign up for an online class, find out if you can email the instructor to determine if her/his teaching beliefs mesh with yours. Unfortunately, my beliefs about writing, creativity, and inspiration did not fall inline with my instructor's. As silly as it may sound, that made the class very difficult for me. My instructor was more of a straightforward, get-it-done kind of writer. While I agree with this on many levels, I also feel writing exercises, journaling, and reading inspirational books are an important part of my life as a writer.
You'll also want to find out how much you're actually expected to accomplish in the course. Ask the instructor this beforehand, if you can. By the end of the fiction class, we were supposed to have written a complete short story or the first full chapter of a novel. That was a novel concept at best for how the course was structured.
Rather than zip through the first draft of a story just to get the ideas and thoughts onto paper, we turned in a specific number of pages each week. Then we revised and revised until those pages were perfect. As a perfectionist anyway, I had a lot of trouble. I'd rather get my story out instead of spending weeks agonizing over the same pages.
It all really comes down to personal preference. Ensure you do your homework before you sign up for a class. Ask questions. You want to choose the right class, so you can get the most out of your valuable time and money.
Starting Your Own Business
Is It Right For You?
Let's start by looking at the benefits of starting your own home-based writing business.
It's incredibly affordable. You'll have little overhead expenses to worry about. You'll need your computer, an Internet connection, a phone, a dictionary, a thesaurus and a ream of paper.
Tax deductions. If you work at home, you'll generally be able to claim the room you work in on your taxes every year-check with your accountant or tax consultant for what you can specifically claim.
Work anytime of the day or the night. Are you a night owl like so many other creative souls? Then work through the night, if you want. Owning your own business allows you flexibility of when and how you work. Of course, you'll always want to make sure your clients have easy access to you throughout the day, so set office hours.
No more sitting in traffic. Unless your creative muse is strongest when you're stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you'll no longer have to suffer through those long hours away from your computer.
You call the shots. You'll be able to choose with whom you work and with whom you don't work.
Take a few minutes and jot down the benefits to you personally of starting your own business. Then jot down the cons of striking out on your own. Which list is stronger?
You may have already decided to start your own business, or you may just be in the consideration stage. You'll want to take this time-no matter which position you're in-to sit down and think about everything from how well your personality is suited to entrepreneurship to if you'll start part-time or full-time.
Now let's look at whether or not you have what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur. If you're a writer, you already have the discipline and ability to work independently that it takes to succeed as a business owner. However, there are some other things you'll also want to take into consideration, especially if you are not currently a full-time writer.
Why are you starting your business? Take a few minutes to sit down and write why you want to have your own business. In other words, are you starting this business because you have passion for what you will be doing? Passion is often more important than even education. According to the Small Business Administration, most entrepreneurs got poor grades in school.
What are your goals? Do you hope to make enough money to support your family, or are you just looking to make some extra money? Defining your goals in this early stage will ensure you are following the right path to success.
Are you a self-starter? If you're a writer, the answer is certainly clear. Any writer knows how critical independence and discipline are to success.
Can you taste success? Will you literally work around the clock, if necessary, to make sure your business takes off? Entrepreneurs have a strong will to make sure their venture succeeds. Do you?
Think about your family. Are they supportive of your business venture? Starting a business takes a commitment of time, and you'll need to expend a lot of your time focusing on your business, time that might usually be reserved for your family.
Full-time or part-time? Are you going to take the plunge and start full-time off the bat, or do you want to just get your feet wet by going part-time to begin? Your finances will likely be the biggest factor in making this decision.
Think carefully whether or not starting a business is right for you. It's a big decision and something to which you must be 100 percent committed if you want to succeed.

Keep Your Driving Record Clean - Online Traffic School
Mike P. Welch knows all too well the realities of some walk-in traffic school experiences, having completed traffic school in August of 2005. In addition to an uncomfortable facility, Welch had to contend with disinterested fellow students and grossly outdated course materials.
"The instructor had us watch a video that was from the 1970s and a big segment was on call boxes, which I felt was irrelevant, considering the majority of the population now has cell phones," he says.
Instead of fostering an atmosphere of learning, "half of the students didn't want to be there and were distracting to the learning process," Welch says. "I didn't appreciate the social stigma of having to reveal my violation in front of a classroom of people. I felt like I was there to be punished, instead of improving my knowledge of traffic laws."
Fortunately, those who are ordered to traffic school or to a defensive driving course, in exchange for wiping points off their driving records, have an alternative to a long day of traffic school. Online traffic and defensive driving schools are becoming exceedingly popular, particularly in California (including among Los Angeles traffic school and San Diego traffic school), Florida and Texas.
Skeptical? Those who have never taken an online course will quickly find it's a fast, easy and effective way to complete traffic school. In fact, statistics prove that online traffic school works. In 2004, more than a third of the 500,000 people ordered to complete traffic school in Florida did so online. Ninety perfect of those who completed the online traffic course passed the final exam.
Compared to Welch's experience with walk-in traffic school, Travis' experience with online traffic school was so effective and so inspiring that he founded Ticket Relief Traffic School (TicketRelief.com). "Not only was the course a breeze, but I actually refreshed my knowledge of California driving and learned a couple new driving laws I didn't know about," he says.
As he researched and learned more about online traffic schools, his belief in the effectiveness of online traffic school was only reinforced. "I found several studies that showed students were able to concentrate better with an online class versus a traditional walk-in school. The studies showed that students who used a computer to take an online traffic school course exhibited a smaller amount of distractions compared to a classroom setting. The students using the computers produced a higher level of concentration and higher test scores than the students in a classroom setting."
Indeed, more and more people are discovering the vast advantages of fulfilling their court requirements by completing online traffic school:
It's easy. Simply register, pay for the course and get started.
It's safe. Many online traffic schools, such as Ticket Relief, offer 128bit encryption to ensure safe credit card transactions.
Save time. Students can complete their online course in as little as six hours, sometimes less.
Finish the course at leisure. With online traffic schools like Ticket Relief, students can save their work and return to it at a later time, unlike traditional traffic school when all work is completed in one session. Of course, those who want to complete the course in one sitting are welcome to do so. In fact, with Ticket Relief, students have access to the course for 160 days from the time they register.
Use any computer. Start the exam on the library's computer and finish it on a home computer. The course for traffic school, with Ticket Relief for example, requires only a computer with an Internet connection.
Save money. Online traffic schools are typically much cheaper with rates ranging from $17 to $50.
Discounts. Ticket Relief offers discounts to senior citizens, students, members of the military and AAA members.
Consistency. Online traffic schools such as Ticket Relief promise students each time they take the course they receive only the highest quality reading material, quizzes and final exam. Ticket Relief ensures all course material is updated yearly.
It's comprehensive. Students will receive a refresher course, covering traffic laws and other pertinent information. Ticket Relief's comprehensive course includes five sections, each ending with a quiz that allows students to gauge their level of comprehension of the course material. The quizzes also help students prepare for the final exam.
Worry-free. Students who fail the final exam needn't worry. Ticket Relief allows for unlimited taking of the final exam for no extra charge, as long as it's taken within the 160 day time limit.
Students who have never taken an online course needn't worry. Most traffic schools provide customer service either via a toll-free number or email, or both.
Ultimately, trying an online traffic school is a low-risk opportunity. Ticket Relief allows for a full refund at any time, provided the student hasn't already completed the final exam. It's also received high marks from its students. "Ticket Relief has been complimented highly on its ease of use, user-friendly environment, and well-organized traffic school course."

The Advantages of Hybrids
plans and pushing produce prices up in grocery stores across the nation, and things might appear bleak for drivers. It might look even bleaker for car dealerships.
Not so.
In fact, car dealerships in Carteret Country, including Rick Gladwell Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, have seen an increase in cars with good gas economy. "I've seen an increase in economy vehicles and a slight decrease in cars that use a lot of gas," owner Rick Gladwell says.
While manufacturers are sweetening the deal to get drivers to purchase by offering gas incentives, many of today's drivers are opting for either the hybrid or fuel savers, which are simply vehicles that get excellent MPG (miles per gallon).
Hybrid vehicles are a popular option because, in addition to being the latest technology, they offer a plethora of advantages, including tax breaks and other incentives. But, perhaps most importantly, hybrid vehicles appeal to drivers who are looking to cut down on gasoline costs.
While much ado has been made about electric cars in the past, the hybrid is a combination of an electric motor with a gasoline engine. A hybrid's gasoline engine is much smaller than that of a traditional car. Additionally, hybrid vehicles have larger than normal batteries.
Essentially, the vehicle uses both the battery and the gasoline for energy when driving, which allows for higher MPG (miles per gallon). To ensure the best gas mileage with hybrids, drivers are encouraged to drive slower and at a consistent speed. Energy is also saved when hybrid drivers dont stop abruptly stopping abruptly causes the battery to use more energy.
According to a 2006 report by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, those hybrid vehicles with the best mileage include: the Honda Insight with 60 MPG in the city and 66 on the highway, the Toyota Prius with 60/51, and the Ford Escape (SUV) with 36/31.
For those drivers who prefer hybrid trucks or SUVs, there are plenty of hybrid options including the GMC Sierra Hybrid, the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid, the Dodge Ram Hybrid, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid.
Furthermore, some are speculating that hybrid cars could curb the United Statesdependence on foreign oil. According to the Energy Information Administration, if the majority of drivers opt for hybrid vehicles, there's the potential to save more than 4,000 barrels of oil on a daily basis by the year 2025, leaving the United States with a surplus of gasoline. The surplus will likely, in turn, mean lower gas prices.
With global warming a major concern, hybrids are also an attractive choice for those who are concerned about the environment. Because they burn less gas than traditional vehicles, hybrid vehicles cut back on pollution and smog. Additionally, compared to traditional vehicles, hybrids emit less pollution when idling in traffic.
While hybrid drivers in Carteret County don't yet enjoy any tax incentives, according to Suzie Guthrie of the Carteret County Tax Department, there are federal tax benefits for hybrid drivers nationwide. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 states that hybrid drivers are
entitled to a tax credit upon purchase of their vehicles. The amount of the tax credit depends, in part, on the make and model of the vehicle purchased.
According to the IRS, buyers of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 4WD Hybrid Pickup Truck, for example, are entitled to a tax credit of $650. For a full listing of eligible vehicles and other conditions of the tax credit, consumers should consult their accountants or the IRS directly.
In addition to the tax credit, some states offer hybrid owners other benefits. Several states, including Florida and California, allow drivers of hybrid vehicles to use the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes regardless of the number of passengers in the car while hybrid drivers in Baltimore enjoy deep discounts at participating parking garages.
North Carolina has yet to adopt incentives for owners of hybrid vehicles, but hybrid drivers may find they enjoy car insurance discounts. Travelers Insurance, for example, trumpets the fact that it offers up to a ten percent discount for hybrid drivers.
Of course, no vehicle - hybrid or otherwise - is without its disadvantages. However, one major myth surrounding the hybrid is simply not true. There has been some concern that the hybrid's electricity poses a major hazard to both the hybrid's occupants and EMS workers in accidents, but Morehead City Firefighter Paul Barnes disagrees.
"It's (the electricity) still low voltage. We've run into more trouble with the large capacity batteries. There's more potential (of a hazard) in a wreck if battery acid is spilled. That is more of a hazard than the electricity,"he says.
Despite its popularity, whether or not the hybrid is around for the long-term is yet to be seen. Randall Parker of Parker Honda and Parker Pontiac-Buick-GMC, Inc. in Morehead City believes the hybrid is merely a transitional vehicle.
"It is very much an interim technology that will bridge the technology gap between a strictly internal combustion engine and fuel cells,"he says.
The evolution of fuel cells in hybrids is set to lead to one thing: the elimination of the gasoline engine, which will be replaced with fuel cells. In conjunction with the hybrid's battery and electric motor, the fuel cells will power the vehicle.
While hybrids tend to have a higher price tag than traditional vehicles, drivers can still enjoy the benefits of high MPG with fuel savers. Fuel savers are simply traditional vehicles that get high mileage per gallon.
The EPA and Department of Energy list the top fuel saving vehicles as the Volkswagen Beetle and Volkswagen Golf with 37/44, and the Volkswagen Jetta with 36/41.
Alternately, the trucks with the highest MPG include the Ford Ranger Pickup (24/29) and the Mazda B2300 (24/29). Donn Buck, General Manager and Partner at Morehead City Ford, has noticed an increase in the fuel savers Ford Focus and Ford Fusion while Mile Toler, Owner of Kurtis Chevrolet Inc, has seen a rise in sales of the Chevrolet Cobalt and Chevrolet Impala, also fuel savers.
According to Gladwell, another popular vehicle option for those looking for good fuel economy is the Jeep Liberty and other diesel-based vehicles.
"Diesel runs very clean," he says, "and while diesel is almost as much as gasoline, it (the diesel powered vehicle) uses 25 percent less fuel and has the same horsepower."
Ultimately, whether it's by driving a hybrid, a fuel saver, or even a diesel-based vehicle, drivers can conserve gasoline while saving considerable money filling up the gas tank.
And, while the hybrid is only interim technology, it is still a step in the right direction, benefiting drivers and the environment while slowly decreasing the nation's dependence on foreign oil.

Road Trip With Pets: Five Tips For A Stress Free Ride
For many a road trip is a fun, even relaxing, experience away from the stresses of everyday life. But, for pets who aren't used to traveling in the car, a road trip could cause unnecessary stress. Fortunately, you can ensure both you and your pet's trip is stress free by following a few simple rules.
Take your pet for rides
If your pet isn't used to car travel, start taking her for drives. Start by taking only short trips of five to ten minutes, and slowly work your way up to longer car trips. The car trips will help in two important ways. First, your pet will become familiar and comfortable with traveling in the car.
Second, she'll begin to understand that every time she goes in the car, she's going to come home again. This is an important trust building experience, especially for those pets who have been adopted and may have been abandoned in the past. Once your pet becomes accustomed to traveling in the car, she may just come running every time she hears you jingle your keys.
If you discover that even short rides cause your pet too much stress, discuss the problem with your veterinarian. Your vet should know your pet's temperament and should be able to provide you with additional advice.
Feed your pet prior to your drive
Make sure you feed your pet three to four hours prior to your departure. After all, you don't want to risk her getting sick in the car. Certain pets, however, will require food even while you're driving. Rabbits, for example, must have constant access to hay, so if you have a rabbit, ensure she has hay she can munch on in her carrier.
Bring fresh tap or bottled water
Keep an adequate supply of water in the car for your pet. According to the ASPCA, it's best to bring bottled or tap water (from home) in the car rather than giving your pet water from rest stops. Your pet's stomach may become unsettled should you give her unfamiliar water.
Make sure your pet is secure
When your pet rides in the car, you must make sure she is secure. Most pets, like cats and rabbits, must and can easily travel in a carrier. Dogs, however, have several options. Like cats and rabbits, dogs can comfortably travel in a carrier. Or, you can purchase a safety harness specifically designed for use in the car.
If your pet is in a carrier, ensure you put the carrier in a safe place. NEVER put your pet's carrier on the floor in the front seat where she'll be exposed to toxic fumes. There have been pets who have died as a result of being exposed to such fumes.
Additionally, many pets, dogs in particular, love to ride in the car with their heads out the window. Regardless of how happy your pet is to stick her out the window, don't allow it. Otherwise, she'll be at risk of particles getting into and damaging her eyes.
Never leave your pet alone in the car
You'll need to stop for plenty of breaks during your road trip - for the sake of yourself and your pet. Breaks are a great way to allow your pet, especially your dog, to get out of the car and stretch her legs. Rest stops generally have areas specifically designed for pets that you can use to give your pet a chance to relieve herself and get some exercise.
Even if your pet can't get out of the car, never leave her alone in your vehicle. Leaving a pet in the car is dangerous any time of the year, but it's particularly worrisome in the summer. You may take all the precautions - from parking in the shade to leaving the window open a crack - to ensure your pet isn't overheated, but the fact is your car is going to become a furnace in only minutes.
Don't leave your pet in the car alone, or you risk her suffering from dehydration or heat stroke, which can lead to death.

Spyware Remover
Keyword phrase: Spyware remover.
Length of Articles: 350 - 400 words
Number of times keyword phrase must appear in each article: 3-4 times
Your every move is being tracked. Someone knows what Web sites you're going to, exactly what pages you're looking at, and how long you stay on that Web site. Sounds like something out of a spy novel, but the fact is millions of computer users around the world are being spied on in cyberspace by spyware.
Essentially, spyware is software that is installed onto your computer without either your consent or your knowledge. Spyware is specifically designed to track your movement both online and offline. The information gathered by the software is then transmitted to the person or entity that had the spyware installed on your computer.
Fortunately, you have a strong line of defense in detecting and wiping out the spyware on your computer: spyware remover software. Spyware remover software basically scans your computer to detect then wipe out any spyware.
But, a good spyware removers does more than identify spyware on your system: It should also detect and remove adware, Trojans, worms, and other dangerous software that is downloaded onto your computer
without your knowledge.
Effective spyware removers also back up your system, which is extremely important if you accidentally delete something that should not have been deleted. The backup allows you to recover the lost information.
A spyware remover is often very easy to use. Generally, you simply have to tell the software to scan your computer for problems, and the spyware remover will compile a list of all the problems it finds. It will then ask you to highlight all of those problems you want fixed, and it fixes the highlighted problems.
It's just that easy if you pick the right spyware remover software. Choose software that is user friendly, with instructions explaining the software and how it works in layman's terms. In addition, you should choose a company that offers customer and technical support, should you have any problems or questions.
The problem really is ensuring that you find, purchase, and use spyware remover software on a regular basis. Finding a good spyware remover program requires research on your part. Don't just choose the first spyware remover that you find. Rather, read as much about each spyware remover program as you can: Product descriptions from the manufacturer; reviews from those who have used the product; and reviews from online and offline software and computer publications.
Finally, if the spyware remover has a free trial scan, take advantage of it to test the speed and ease of the software. In turn, you will have a better idea of whether it's a product you want to purchase.
Book Review: Written For BooksILoved.com
This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fizgerald
by Beth Williams
"Under the glass portcullis of a theatre Amory stood, watching the first great drops of rain splatter down and flatten to dark stains on the sidewalk. The air became gray and opalescent; a solitary light suddenly outlined a window over the way; then another light; then a hundred more danced and glimmered into vision. Under his feet a thick, iron-studded skylight turned yellow; in the street the lamps of the taxi-cabs sent out glistening sheens along the already black pavement. The unwelcome November rain had perversely stolen the day's last hour and pawned it with that ancient fence, the night...."
Such splendid, breathtaking descriptions--do they even exist anymore? In a world where we're in a rush for everything, we turn to books to calm our hurried souls, but today's books just don't have the same delightful description as those of generations past. Treat yourself to a taste of splendor. Devour the lovely descriptions and true-to-life characters of F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece "This Side of Paradise." This is my all-time favorite, favorite, favorite Fitzgerald book. The combination of spectacular (if spectacular can even do Fitzgerald's talent an ounce of justice) description and a complex character makes "This Side of Paradise" a must read for anyone who loves a good story.
Amory Blaine is someone with whom we can all relate at one time or another in our lives. Amory is a highly intelligent Princeton man who is searching for love in life. Perhaps most importantly, though, he is searching for something to satisfy his intense desire for living life to the very fullest. He yearns to become his own man, not the man his mother molded nor the man Princeton's strict guidelines required. Amory wants to be himself, a concept that is so easy to relate to that, despite the difference in generations, Amory becomes as real as your neighbor or someone you might run into at the grocery store.
Meet Amory Blaine. He is a well-bred young boy, who traveled throughout America with his mother during his childhood before she sent him to live with relatives in Minnesota for several years. He soaks up his new lifestyle in Minnesota, slowly losing grasp of his very cultured upbringing. When he finally returns to live with his mother, he tells her he wants to go away to school. She sends him to St. Regis where he just doesn't fit in. He is too cultured, too intellectual compared to his classmates. In an effort to fit in and be one of the gang, Amory is determined to become an athlete. But Amory doesn't want to be just any athlete. He wants to be the best football player at St. Regis.
While Amory makes it through high school without any major problems, he still doesn't feel as though he fits in...until he enters Princeton. Princeton is a haven for Amory, a place where he can explore, savor political and literary discussions and discover some of the most profound books ever written. He even finds a set of close friends: Kerry, Burne and Tom. Amory's college years are peppered with love affairs, slacking off and tragedy. Despite allowing his studies to suffer, Amory's avid thirst for reading and philosophical issues never wanes. His life is changed, however, when he heads overseas for the battlefields of WWI in his final year at Princeton.
