1. State as clearly as possible what the job will be. Just saying that you want 50 articles for web content doesn't really tell the writers much. Give as many details as you can, so that your writer can accurately quote the job.

2. Ask for writing samples. You can state what you would like the articles to be about if your topic is somewhat specific. Just keep in mind that if you don't pay the writer for that content, you don't have the right to use it later. A good writer will be able to provide samples of work that they have done in the past, or they will prepare a small sample piece about your topic.

3. Give your writer as much time as possible. We all understand that situations come up that require rush work, but if you are expecting a completely overhauled website in 48 hours, you're setting yourself and your writer up to fail.

4. Remember that your writer likely has other clients to deal with too, so please be patient. If you expect that your writer will devote absolutely 100% of their attention to you and your project, make that clear up front and expect to pay more.

1. Use sample materials, or anything that hasn't been paid for. Until you pay for it, that content belongs to the writer and using it is a violation of copyright laws.

2. Change the project after it has already begun. If the agreement was originally 20 articles at 400 words for 60 dollars and they will be due in 10 days, don't go back and try and change the agreement. If you'd like to have an ongoing relationship with your writer, tell them so and negotiate each job separately.

3. Be overly demanding. Several people make the mistake of thinking that freelance writers are less than the professionals that they are. Of course there are bad apples in every field, but for the most part, writers who have experience and positive feedback are very good at what they do. Remember this. If you trusted them enough to hire them, trust them to do the job.
