This Squidoo Lens will discuss what a proxy is and how it can be used to your benefit.

Common Proxy Sites

XCLE Proxies
XCLE Proxies is a free proxy server which allows you to surf the web anonymously.

What is a Proxy?

A proxy basically lets you surf the web like any other browser. However, there is a catch. It will take the URL that you want to visit and relay the information to you through the proxy.

During this entire time, your IP Address is hidden and kept safe.

This means the spyware programs or computer monitoring systems will only see that you visited the proxy, but they have can't figure out which websites you viewed using the proxy.

The owner of the website will not see your IP Address (if it's recorded), but instead will see the IP Address of the server which the proxy is running on.

Where would I use a Proxy?

A proxy is meant to help people at work, school, libraries or any other public hotspot to keep their information private and secure.

A proxy can ensure that your IP will be hidden and others can't see what you're doing.

It is also an easy way to bypass certain restrictions which are often placed on library or school computers to prevent viewing of adult, illegal or any other explicit content.

Proxies are free and easy to use, like Sixty6 Proxy.

If you're having trouble finding proxies it may be worth checking out hexalist.com. It lists both non-SSL and SSL proxies that can bypass systems like websense.

SSL Proxy

Most proxies use HTTPS Proxies which assist in browsing websites. However, certain websites require that you would need to handle certain encrypted information, which cannot be handled by the simple HTTPS proxies found on the web.

On the other hand, SSL Proxies usually save this type of information on their server. This might be a loss of privacy if this information contains important information.

Therefore, HTTPS proxies would be the safest ones to use.
