My PS3 Won't Turn On And There's A Yellow Light - What Can I Do?

What Causes The Yellow Light Error?
Overheating
The most commonly referred to cause of the YLOD on a PS3 is that of overheating. It is believed that when your console overheats some of the conductive solder joints used on the motherboard "short out", and the melted solder changes position, thus rendering the connections useless. It is also believed that temperatures can simply get so hot that the cooling system, primarily the CPU and GPU heatsinks stop functioning, and the conductive thermal paste then requires replacing before you can fix the yellow light.
Hard Drive Errors
Whilst it was initially believed that overheating was the sole cause of the yellow light of doom, it has now been discovered that hard drive errors can also cause the problem. This seems pretty bizarre, as they are two completely different things, but both seem to cause the same problem. It seems as if a loose hard drive connection, a corrupted partition on the hard drive, or a plain faulty hard drive can all be causes of the PS3 yellow light of death. The good news is that hard drive-based errors are much easier to fix than those caused by overheating.
