Sketch Filters

Adobe Photoshop comes with a number of filters that make it easy to give your photographs the appearance of a painting or drawing. Each of these filters can be applied to the whole image, part of the image that you have selected with one of the marquee tools, or individual layers.

Note: These examples were prepared using Adobe Photoshop CS3. Other versions may vary slightly

Chalk and Charcoal

Filters >> Sketch >> Chalk & Charcoal

The Chalk and Charcoal filter has three adjustable parameters:
Charcoal Area - the intensity of the selected foreground colour
Chalk Area - the intensity of the selected background colour
Stroke Pressure - Increases/decreases the overall contrast between foreground and background colour by emulating the pressure applied to the drawing medium

Background colours are drawn diagonally bottom-left to top-right, foreground colours are drawn diagonally top-left to bottom-right and midtones are solid.

Charcoal

Filter >> Sketch >> Charcoal

The Charcoal filter has three adjustable parameters:
Charcoal Thickness - adjusts the thickness of the foreground colour
Detail - adjusts the amount of midtone detail that is included/excluded
Light/Dark Balance - Lightens or darkens the overall effect

The foreground colour is used for the charcoal and the background colour is used for the paper. The foreground is posterised, creating bold edges and the midtones are drawn diagonallt bottom-left to top-right.

Conte Crayon

Filter >> Sketch >> Conte Crayon

The Conte Crayon filter has several adjustable parameters:
Foreground Level - intensity of the selected foreground colour
Background Colour - intensity of the selected background colour
Texture - choose from one of four textures: canvas, brick, burlap and sandstone.
Scaling - refers to the size of the grain on the selected texture (low values = fine, high values = coarse)
Relief - refers to the depth of the grain on the selected texture (low values = shallow, high values = deep)
Light - allows you to select the direction of the light on the canvas, brick, etc
Invert - inverts the light effect on the texture

Graphic Pen

Filter >> Sketch >> Graphic Pen

The Graphic Pen filter has three adjustable parameters:
Stroke Length - adjusts the length of the strokes of the selected foreground colour
Light/Dark Balance - specifies how much of the foreground colour is applied over the background colour
Stroke Direction - allows you to choose the direction of the simulated pen strokes

Fine lines of foreground colour are used to emulate the strokes of a pen

Halftone Pattern

Filter >> Sketch >> Halftone Pattern

Replicates the halftone printing process previously used to print photographs in monochrome newspapers and magazines.

The Halftone Pattern filter has three adjustable parameters:
Size - determines the size of the dots used to create the image (low values = fine, high values = coarse)
Contrast - increases or decreases the overall contrast of the effect
Pattern Type - Circle and Line are available as well as the traditional Dots used in newspaper printing

Note Paper

Filter >> Sketch >> Note Paper

Gives the effect of an embossed image on rough paper

The Note Paper filter has three adjustable parameters:
Image Balance - determines a lightness threshold for areas to be included/excluded
Graininess - sets the coarseness of the paper texture
Relief - sets the depth of the paper texture

Photocopy

Filter >> Sketch >> Photocopy

Replicates a monotone photocopy of the image

The Photocopy filter has two adjustable parameters:
Detail - Determines how much of the original detail of the image is included/excluded
Darkness - adjusts the intensity of the foreground colour

Reticulation

Filter >> Sketch >> Reticulation

Reticulation is a mottling effect that can be achieved by using chemicals of different temperatures during the development process. The Reticulation filter attempts to replicate this.

The Reticulation filter has three adjustable parameters:
Density - increases/decreases the amount of mottling/graining
Foreground Level - adjusts the intensity of the foreground colour
Background Level - adjusts the intensity of the background colour

Stamp

Filter >> Sketch >> Stamp

The Stamp filter replicates a rubber-stamp of the image.

The Stamp filter has two adjustable parameters:
Light/Dark Balance - determines a lightness threshold for inclusion/exclusion from the effect
Smoothness - determines the integrity of edges in the effect
