This a great resource for learning about the impact of the psoas. It is amazing the results that you can have on low back pain when you treat the psoas. Most people are totally unaware that the psoas attaches to your lumbar vertebrae in the front and when pathological can place a tremendous load on the lumbar discs.
  • Dianne Calvert N.Z. Nov 12, 2011 @ 3:09 pm | delete
I am so thrilled to learn about the psoas muscle. I have had back pain, especially at night and so many back spasms I am over it all!! To now discover this week that my psoas muscle is too tight has given me renewed possibilities that I will no longer feel I am a cripple when I get out of sitting or sleeping positions. A z nail is how I rise in the morning from sleep. My chiropractor has given me relief from twisted pelvis, double curve and an s shaped spine. My ribs now lie flat instead of my being able to put my fingers under the ones on the left hand side!! Thank goodness for my chiropractor. Now I have a sense of improvement even more. This all started 40 years ago it would seam, when my left knee dislocated and on stepping down from a chair I landed on the floor and so on it went, and got progressively worse!!!
  • KathyT Oct 16, 2011 @ 3:58 pm | delete
I have definitely got to bookmark this lens! Actually, I wish you lived near me so I could just come on over and get some back relief! Nice job on this lens!

If you watch people walk sometimes you can see this muscle hike the hip up assisting in flexing or abducting the femur which is not its main function. The psoas and QL are the biggest culprits when dealing with low back pain.

Great lens about psoas. I learned a lot of information about psoas here. I now fully understand its function in our body. I am particularly drawn to the last part of the lens which talks about psoas and possible hip replacement. It's alarming to know that a number of disease conditions require hip replacement especially now that hip replacement devices gain negative feedbacks from its recipient. There have been cases filed against the manufacturer of the device after experiencing DePuy hip recall symptoms.

Great lens. I think that you have done well in explaining the significance of the psoas in relation to back and hip pain. I suffered from low back pain for over twenty years. And I found out a lot of my problem was a tightened psoas. I got the most success from Aaron Mattes' Active Isolated Stretching technique. Many of your articles have good explanations on opening the psoas. I think that Mattes' method for opening the psoas may be the most comprehensive. If you are interested, please check my blog post Low Back Pain & The Psoas

Due to work related projects, I often have to sit in front of the computer for prolonged periods of time. It wasn't until a month after sitting in front of the desk whole day that I started experiencing some lower back pain. To relieve such pain, I've tried taking Ibuprofen and other on-the-counter pain relievers but to my dismay, they just didn't work.

The information on this lens is so informative. This may be the alternative form of medication that I need for my back pain. I wouldn't want to end up like my aunt who had to undergo hip surgery which now worries her because of the Hip Replacement Recall issues.

Barry, I have used positional release and strain counter strain also. But sometimes I really want to lengthen the muscle in some cases but for many reasons the patient cannot do traditional psoas stretches. Have you found a way to lengthen the psoas by positioning the trunk versus extending the hip?

Having worked in pain management for a number of years, I find that this is one of the most overlooked possible etiologies (as you explain) to consider when attempting to diagnose the source of someone's pain. Your lens contains a wealth of great information on this topic. I have already recommended it to several of my patients, especially the videos of exercises that will help correct the problem and hopefully lessen their pain.
Thanks for a fantastic lens! I will be on the lookout for any others you have authored...

I was super glad to find this lens here, it took me years to discover the psoas was responsible for most of my back pain. Years of sitting at my job and stress (Virgo, shrug) petrified my psoas. The first time I relaxed it using Liz Koch's techniques was like being a teen-ager again physically. It takes persistence but it's such a key, overlooked muscle...In this day and age of computer oriented careers, I think we're going to hear a lot more from the Psoas, this is truly a wealth of info, nice job.

As a longtime sufferer of back pain due to psoas spasms I think your lens is just super! Accurate and comprehensive it will provide relief to anyone seeking information on this subject.

Particularly notable is the commentary on Active Release Therapy. This is my treatment of choice and I was introduced to it by Dr. Grant Stowell, a chiropractor in Frisco Texas. I heartily recommend Dr. Stowell and the Active Release Technique to all backpain suffers.

I do the same kind of positional release work. I find that the psoas minor is often at fault. Its job is to balance the pelvis from the opposite pubic bone when the leg is raised by the psoas. Bending and twisting at the thoracic lumbar junction often disturbs the nerves that control this muscle where it is attached. I use magnet therapy to reduce swelling in this area.

WOW... I like the way you think! My suspicions are confirmed! I have been wrestling with my agitated legs, (the sides of my thighs, IT bands) my hips joints, (sciatica pain) and lower back pain (kidney area). I became so fed up with the pain, I looked to the internet for answers. I started by identifying, studying, then isolating all the involved muscles. I tried to "feel" their individual roles in my actions and the associated pain. I finally figured out that the psoas was my problem. I didn't even know I had a pair of psoas! With that BIG clue, I found a lot of answers, some similar to your compilation, but your compilation goes way beyond with MORE solutions than I could have ever found! I thank you for your abilities and your kindness to share!!! -- 5 --

Hi, I had an acute attack groin and abdominal pain that kept me bent over. After an ER visit with Cat scan of my abdomen that showed nothing wrong, I went to my primary doctor. She explained the psoas muscle was probably causing my pain and prescribed muscle relaxers. 2 days latter I passed 2 kidney stones and the pain went away. If you have no relief from treatment of the PSOAS, consider the possibility of a kidney stone that does not show up on x-ray (typically uric acid).Kidney stones can stay stuck for months sometimes.
I am SO grateful that I do not have to tolerate true PSOAS pain! Great lens.It is loaded with great information.
I have made a lens about kidney stones that you might want to check out if Psoas treatment is not working.

While I believe the Psoas muscle is important for stability reasons, I believe a combination of strength in all core muscles is optimal and it is much easier to build up many muscles versus only concentrating on the Psoas muscle.

    Hi
I am new to this myself but was just reading your lens and found it very interesting-you have done an excellent job
I work with ultra marathoners and one of my pet things is the Psoas stretching-I found that as someone who is on their feet constantly gets tired, they take shorter and shorter steps which allows the muscle to close up, this results in more tiredness as it takes 2 steps to cover the same ground-this of course results in more energy used and the problems you refer to
I have not done a lens yet but my website is www.aching-legs-relief.com

In reference your 'restless legs' research
I have found that while there are many contributors to this there is a component that may simulate them and which would fit into your Psoas theory-

I call this component 'Angry Muscles' where because of the difficulties caused by the Psoas the way of walking, running and standing is changed placing stress on the other muscle structures and causing irritation to the nerves etc

Thank you for your dedication and expertise. One "negative" comment---the walking skeleton video%u2026.I noticed the ankles of the skeleton were not properly plantar flexing %u2026.over time, a person NOT properly flexing his/her ankles could develop: plantar faciitis, knee/hip impingement, in addition to psoas issues.

Many thanks for your time. Your comments are always welcomed.

Excellent content and very informative. As a Licensed Massage Therapist (medical) and Physical Therapist Ass't with over 17 years of experience I found that certain medications can often induce Restless Leg syndrome. I found this out as soon people were taken of the medication by their MD the symptoms dissapeared, so it is alsways good to mention this to your patient. I also found that the my patient's low back pain often dissapated after I stretched both the Psoas muscles, Gluteus muscles, and aswell the Quadratus Lumborum musculature. In addition a lordosis or kyphosis are normal curvature of the spine. Keep up the good work.

As a Physical Therapist with over 15 years in the profession I have never seen a more insightful evaluation of the Psoas muscle. I have always suspected the Psoas as a primary culprit in lowback pain and other lower extremity dysfunctions but could never find any deeper information then what was found in the Anatomy books.
I believe that this is a muscle that is commonly OVER strengthened AND OVER stretched! I believe if you are looking for "balance" then you must ALWAYS incorporate the Gluteus muscles. On stretching, because of its insertion on the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae it SHORTENS if you allow the spine to extend (lordosis)while you extend the hip! That seems to be a very common mistake in multiple listings above.
Overall the context is very thought provoking and I thank you for establishing and maintaining this site!!

Our goal is to restore intradiscal height and lordosis curves. Patients who undergo the protocol have experienced restoration of normal range of motion and lumbar curve, disc rehydration, and increased core strength. The procedure focuses on 6 steps, when addressed in combination, has a lasting impact on the spinal health of the patient.

Muscles - Muscle spasms prevent motion of the spine, with prohibit spinal column adjustment. We need to reduce adhesions and spasms, which begins the remodeling of scar tissue in old back injuries.

Water / Nutrition - The body is 73 % water. Patients who are dehydrated and have musculoskeletal problems can maintain levels as low as 55% water. The spinal nucleus is 88% water. Degenerative discs are dehydrated and have abnormal function. Patients must drink %uFFFD ounce per pound body weight per day to reduce inflammation and allow disc rejuvenation.

Discs - Alternating pushing and stretching cycles are used to soften the hardened gel-like discs. The loading and unloading cycles cause rehydration for disc rejuvenation.

Motion - Spinal distraction (decompression) is used to create motion throughout the entire spine. To be effective, decompression must be applied with full spinal movement, after which we evaluate for chiropractic adjustments.

Muscle Balance - Light weights are used to retrain proprioceptive reflexes of the brain to allow correction of the spine's posture and structure by strengthening the core muscles of the spine to hold it all together.

Isometric Exercises - Muscles support the curves of the spine. The patient can perform isometric exercises to strengthen the new corrected curves.
