How To Downgrade A PSP - PSP Firmware Downgrade

 

If you've ever tried to play games on a PSP through the memory stick, chances are you also want to do it on your own PSP as well. But, unfortunately, not everybody can do this with their devices. The firmware that can play games through the Memory Stick is limited to the 1.5 version that was popular before Sony upgraded later-release units from the factory, with most having version 2.0 or later firmware standard.

But PSP owners that also have a propensity for hacking have already found a way through this problem: to get their devices to play games like a 1.5 machine, they invented ways to get 1.5 firmware data onto their 2.x devices. There are many that have gone before you, so what this means is that many can also provide support should you choose to do it yourself on your own unit.

What you need 

Obviously, you need to have a PSP to do a downgrade. There are also some exceptions to the rule, so check first if the downgrading process covers your PSP version. What you also need to have on hand is a spare battery because you will be sacrificing one to downgrade, as well as the stock memory stick, since you're probably using a larger-cap MS anyway, this probably won't matter much to you.

The two final items that you need to have is the Pandora's battery program which you can get online for free, hacking software designed to use your spare battery and MS to downgrade firmware, and someone else who has 1.5 PSP software so he or she can copy files from the other PSP onto yours.

How to start downgrading 

Once you've made sure that your PSP is compatible for the downgrade, and you've downloaded the necessary software to do the downgrade, as well as everything else you might need, you're now ready to go about doing your PSP downgrade steps.

What happens during the downgrade? 

Basically, the steps involved are divided into three major portions. The first involves converting your memory stick and battery into the combo that will ultimately unlock your PSP and downgrade it. The process for the battery and memory stick can possibly be reversed, but be prepared in the event that you can't return your battery to normal.

You can also use your battery and memory stick to downgrade other PSPs as well. Dead PSP units can be revived as well if they didn't survive previous attempts to get them downgraded as well. You will also need to do some connectivity tasks from your PC to the PSP. The installer program will copy the image onto the memory stick, then onto the PSP itself. This pretty much sums up the important points of the process, and the end result will be that you will now have a PSP using 1.5 firmware.

Doing the Upgrade yourself 

There are instructions on how to go about your upgrade that come with the software itself, and there are numerous internet forums as well that can give the right processes to you. A final note on doing downgrades to your PSP, none of this is actually licensed by Sony. Nobody has to answer for any mistakes you make while you downgrade, and you could possibly damage your unit as well. When this happens, you'll be sure to have a ruined day. But with the number of people who've had success with this process, you can be relatively certain of having a newly-hacked PSP that plays games from your Memory Stick.
