About Pu-Erh Tea

Pu-erh Tea comes from Yunnan, China, a region known for producing excellent Pu-Erh tea. Tea brewed from 1st Grade Pu-Erh Tea has a very dark reddish brown color. The aroma is distinct with an earthy undertone. The taste is lightly roasted with a prominent initial flavor and the aftertaste is slightly sweet and roasted which lingers.

What makes Pu-erh tea so unique? Well, just about everything. The growing conditions of the region, the kind of tea used, and an unusual fermenting process all add up to this very special tea.

As with many varities of teas and coffees, Pu-erh is named after the region where it was first harvested. There is a small town in the Yunnan province called Pu-erh. They harvest the tea from a broad-leaved variety of tea, that is supposedly a very ancient strain of tea.

One of the most significant distinctions of this tea is that it gets better over time. These aged teas are prized and can be found in vintages, like wine, some dating back 40 to 50 to 100 years.

Think of it as you would a fine wine.

Very old samples can be incredibly expensive.
All teas

have a wide spectrum of health benefits, but Pu-erh has extra ones. Drinking Pu-erh tea can help reduce cholesterol and improve fat metabolism, according to scientific studies.

Brewing Pu-erh Tea

Easy to brew!

Dark Pu'erh is the easiest to brew; unlike traditional tea preparation you can't over brew this tea. Prepare Pu'erh with the hottest water possible and steep for 5-7 minutes or longer if you like. You can wash your tealeaves once or twice to optimize the flavor. No matter what you do it is almost impossible to ruin this tea!

"Because of the long time fermentation, the Pu-erh tea includes much bacteria and the microorganism, therefore, it certainly uses the boiling water to swell and we should wash tea two times."

Interesting Information About Pu-erh Tea

Some pu-erh tea trees can be ancient, the oldest known tree is over 2000 years old!

Pu-erh leaves are processed differently than green tea leaves. They are oxidized similar to an oolong tea, but not as long as black tea. The leaves are then dried loose or compressed into tea bricks, tea cakes or Tuochas that look like bird nests. For most Americans, tea in this state is a unique visual experience. Some tea cakes have been aged in caves to develop their particularly earthy flavor.

Some pu-erh teas come in loose leaf and compressed forms. The loose leaf is easy to measure and generally milder tasting.

Pu-erh tea's unique double fermentation may create special enzymes and microbes that offer the body micronutrients essential for better health.

Many coffee drinkers enjoy pu-erh's rich, deep flavors. Since pu-erh tea has less caffeine than coffee, it is a great alternative for those looking to decrease caffeine intake but still like a full bodied beverage.

Health Benefits of Pu'erh Tea?

This information is provided as information only and should not be taken as medical advice.

This is what I have read about Pu'erh Tea

Whether in tuo cha or loose leaf forms, these unique teas have long been used in China for the medicinal benefits. The soothing properties aid digestion and are perfect after heavy or greasy meals. More recent studies indicate powerful cholesterol lowering effects, blood cleansing properties and aid significantly in weight loss efforts. Many published studies have been done showing the enormous health benefits of this wonderful tea. The most eye opening of these studies was conducted in France several years ago. A blind study was conducted with 500 hyperlipidemia patients (individuals with advanced cholesterol conditions, usually controlled with medication). Half of the controlled group consumed 3-4 cups of Pu'erh daily, while the rest of the participants were given something else. After a 30-day period the results showed that drinking Pu'erh on a regular basis could significantly lower cholesterol and further research confirmed that Pu'erh was as effective as the most advanced cholesterol lowering medications available. This is just one of the many healthy benefits of this delicious tea.

************

In the 1970's Chinese doctors in Kunming reported clinical experiments in which drinking pu-erh was shown to lower cholesterol levels in the blood stream. French researchers at St. Antoine Hospital in Paris duplicated these results and found that three cups of pu-erh a day for a month brought lipids down 25 percent in 20 hyperlipidemia patients, while those on other teas showed no change. These tests showed pu-erh performed at least as well as clofibrate, the most advanced medicine for the purpose, without the drug's side effects. It has since been shown to help reduce body weight by increasing the metabolism. Many report that drinking it after meals relieves any overstuffed feelings and aids digestion. The Chinese claim that pu-erh also can lower blood alcohol after drinking, prevent dysentery, and stimulate secretions from the spleen and other organs.

Pu-erh has long been considered to have health benefits, from lowering high cholesterol to aiding indigestion. Mellow, earthy, even 'old' describe its taste.

These bowls are perfect for travelling. Use one bowl for a large mug or small pot and enjoy its many infusions. It has a dark, full-bodied brew with a distinctive earthy taste.
Yunnan Pu-erh
Pu-erh has been drunk in China since the Tang dynasty (A.D. 650-800). Because of its large leaf, special growing conditions, longer leaf oxidation and 'secret' storage requirements, Pu-erh has taken on a very different taste. Earthy, old, mellow, even musty have all been used to describe Pu-erh. We say rich and delicious. This is a large, bold leaf with a full earthy flavor.

A dark, full-bodied brew that holds up very well to several infusions. Long valued for its cholesterol-reducing ability. Enjoy anytime, but especially after a meal.

I love green tea which I brew in my cast iron Japanese teapot in the morning and feel it has helped my health; but I think I would like to try this Pu-erh tea as well. There is no doubt but that tea can be very good for your health.
