Authors and artists in the Public Domain for 2012

Celebrating the books, artwork, magazines and music that becomes freely available in the public domain on New Years Day each year. Complete list of pubic domain sources for photographs and images, documents and many other resources.

Copyright restrictions on artwork, books and other publications expire several years after the life of the author. The number of years varies in counties around the world, but in the United States books are released into the public domain with a clear and easy to understand system:

The copyright expires on a book when it is "published before 1923 or published at least 95 years ago in the U.S. OR published 50 years after the author's death in some countries, 70 years after death in others."

Now if that's not clear to you, then welcome to the party! Honoring the creative works of famous authors and painters, designers and song writers who's great labor ended more than 70 years ago. Their legacy can now circulate as a cultural heritage for the benefit of society.

Countdown to Public Domain Day

Public Domain Day: January 1, 2013

Set your calendars

Wait 9 years for the party to start in the United States!

(new page) Africa Asia Europe world globe at ZazzleThe real story is that Public Domain Day is celebrated internationally for the next decade because in the United States, no books will enter into the public domain until the year 2019 (95 years after 1922).

In practice, this means creative works done "for hire" with a publisher are protected for 95 years from the date of publication. However, the work of private authors enters the public domain 70 years after the author's death. This is the term of copyrights in the European Union, the only place we will hear about new public domain announcements until 2019.

James Joyce

Actually, Dubliners and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man have been in the public domain in the United States for a long time. The interesting story is that of his grandson, Stephen Joyce, who now serves as the poster child in favor of limiting copyright restrictions because of his unseemly conduct in court trying to extend the copyright of his ancestor.

Why is Wikipedia blacked-out?

Protest SOPA and PIPA - 18 January 2012

Wikipedia is protesting against SOPA and PIPA by blacking out the English Wikipedia for 24 hours, beginning at midnight January 18, Eastern Time. Readers who come to English Wikipedia during the blackout will not be able to read the encyclopedia. Instead, you will see messages intended to raise awareness about SOPA and PIPA, encouraging you to share your views with your representatives, and with each other on social media. Read more...

Official websites and news

Today (January 16), the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (Midnight, Eastern Time). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States-the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECTIP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate-that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

We think everyone should have access to educational material on a wide range of subjects, even if they can't pay for it. We believe in a free and open Internet where information can be shared without impediment. We believe that new proposed laws like SOPA-and PIPA, and other similar laws under discussion inside and outside the United States-don't advance the interests of the general public.

You can read a very good list of reasons to oppose SOPA and PIPA, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

I enjoyed reading this. The copyright laws are important, and as a writer, I appreciate them. At the same time, I enjoy printing public domain materials for use at home. Blessings.
