- wikimedia is NOT a reliable source!! i have found photographs i personally took and i personally own all rights to - posted on there by someone else who took them off my website and posted them!!!
anyone can post anything there and CLAIM it is public domain!!!
do NOT trust this site or any site that allows the general public to create an account and upload to them!!!!!
you WILL be in legal trouble when the REAL owners catch you!!!!

- Okay, so there is no such thing in the whole world as trustworthy public domain and you will be sued and penalized and in debt for billions if you violate copyright unwittingly. So best to use only your own photos and art, and be prepared to defend and prove they ARE yours and you never once in your life looked at another photo or artwork that is remotely similar.
This is why I no longer create or share any artwork.
BUT be aware that you can sue the shit out of someone all you want - the court will only give you what you can prove as your damages. So unless you were selling that photo foir MILLIONS somewhere else you'll be lucky to get enough money to pay the lawyer. Most laywers won't even touch these cases. But hey, threaten away.
People steal my original artwork all the time. I have never gotten ANY damages or even courtesy of removal. I have been accused of plagarism of my own work.
I am sick of everyone who takes a candid blurry shot of anything acting like they are the world's next great undiscovered master photographer and the world will end if I use it as one of a dozen references to draw a flower of that species. Like I said, this is why I no longer create art.
But don't worry, I'll never use any of your photos if I can help it.
Other lenses on Squidoo BTW list Deviant Art as a resource for public domain art. The pages right on the site show that some rights are reserved, yet some of my art has been stolen from there.
People who will steal your stuff are going to steal it. The only way to keep your precious art and photos safe IS TO NOT PUT THEM ON THE INTERNET. People who respectfully try not to use anything not in the public domain - are not going to get found liable for millions in damages. Sorry to say, most judges -IF they know anything about it which is very unlikely - are going to rule that the user at least tried to use due dilligence and isn't liable for damages - assuming there are any. Hurt feelings don't count.
DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER DANGER DANGER
NO PLACE IS SAFE. NEVER USE ANY ART OR PHOTOS. RABID PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ARTISTS WILL DESCEND ON YOU AND TAKE AWAY YOUR BIRTHDAY! NEVER DO ANYTHING, THAT'S THE ONLY SAFE THING. TAKE YOUR OWN PHOTO AND IF IT IS SIMILAR GET SUED FOR THAT TOO. DON'T DRAW ANYTHING THAT SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE EVER PHOTOGRAPHED BECAUSE YOU'LL BE ACCUSED OF USING THEIR PRECIOUS PHOTO FOR A REFERENCE WITHOUT PAGES OF LEGAL PERMISSIONS.
Sheesh. People. Get over yourselves.
