Are you taking advantage of Article Marketing?

The concept of "Article Marketing" is growing in popularity as people realize that it can be a powerful way to drive free website traffic.

I've been publishing articles and e-books for the past 3 years. As a result, it has driven thousands of visitors to my website and created several new clients. I should also note that being a published "expert" may also help you raise your prices or ask for higher fees.

I also recommend you use a targeted email marketing campaign to drive traffic to your online articles. You can use tool like BuzzBuilder Pro for this.

Top Sites For Publishing Articles

Not all sites are going to help you drive web traffic. As a rule, I only submit articles to websites that have a Google PageRank of at least 4. This means that the site gets quite a bit of traffic and Google considers it a substantial player on the web. Click here for a free Google PageRank Checker.

Here is a list of free sites that have produced the best results.
Squidoo
PageRank: 8
If you're on this site, you're probably familiar with Squidoo. If not, I recommend you spend some time getting to know the site, since it's probably the best tool for publishing your articles and content.

Recommendations:
This site allows you to add links, surveys, videos, and photos. Therefore, I suggest you take advantage of this by creating an expanded version for each of your articles. Not only will your article be more engaging, but you can link to your squidoo page from other sites. For example, you could publish an article on EzineArticles.com (mentioned below) and then at the bottom of the article include a note like, "for more ideas on this topic, view the expanded version at www.squidoo.com/yoursite.
BusinessWeek's Business Exchange
PageRank: 7
This site is owned by BusinessWeek Magazine and has a lot of traffic. What is also unique about this site is that you can create your own category if your article doesn't belong in any of the standard categories. In other words, you can create your own niche.
Biznik
PageRank: 5
This is a business networking site that also features an area to publish articles for free. While its PageRank is only a 5, Biznik members are very active and you'll see more page views for your articles.

Recommendations:
Biznik ranks its articles primarily based on how useful it was on a scale from 1 to 10. Higher-scoring articles show up more in the search results. After you publish a new article, ask friends and colleagues to score it.

Newly-published articles automatically show up on the front page for 2-3 days and get a lot of exposure. Therefore, don't publish more than 1 article at a time. Allow each article to fall off the "new articles" list before you publish the next one.
Go Articles
PageRank: 6
One of the largest article directories on the web. Recently-added articles have a high chance of being featured on their home page for a short period, so follow the same advice I gave for Biznik.

Recommendations
You'll be competing for traffic against some members who have contributed hundreds, even thousands, of articles. If you don't plan to submit this many, make sure each one is well-written and packed with ideas. Your best bet is to get listed on their "Most Requested Articles" list.
EzineArticles
PageRank: 6
Another big site with a log of visitors. It also offers a lot of non-business related categories.

Recommendations:
When you register for their site, you'll receive a series of email tips with strategies for writing compelling articles. Read them--it will make a big difference in how many people read them and tell others about them.
iSnare
PageRank: 5
Like the other sites, you can submit articles to iSnare for free. But what I like best about this site is their Article Distribution service. For just $2 per article, they will submit it to over 1000 other article directories and publishers. This is a no-brainer, as it dramatically increases your exposure.
Amazines
PageRank: 4
This site offers one of the broadest ranges of categories for you to publish your article under. Its PageRank is only a 4 but the site is great for people with a small niche.

Recommendations:
It has an entire section that lists the most recently-published articles, so add new articles often.
SearchWarp
PageRank: 4
This site has mostly non-corporate content and is great for people who are selling and writing about topics ranging from camping to shopping.

Other Directory Sites

In addition to the large directories I have already listed, you should also look for smaller, niche directories for your specific industry. For example, I offer software and consulting to Sales & Marketing professionals so I often publish articles on sites like SalesPractice and Sphinn.

Often, these niche sites don't refer to themselves as "directories." You may want to do a Google search for "discussion forums" or "networking".

Here is a short list of other sites you can look at. They have a lower Google PageRank and don't receive as many visitors but they can still be a good resource if you're willing to invest a bit more time.
ArticleCentral
PageRank: 2
Idea Marketers
PageRank: 3
Business Clique

Driving Traffic To Your Articles

Your articles won't help you much unless people read them. Here are a few suggestions on creating more readers:

Suggestion #1
Link to your articles from your website and blog. When you have a long article, you may want to publish a shorter version of it on your website and then link to the "extended version" that's published on an article directory.

Suggestion #2
In each article, create a link to your website. Instead of using your company name as a link, find keywords in the article that describe your business and then use these words as the link to your site. For example, I would link to my site using the phrase Lead Generation Tools.

Suggestion #3
Create links from one article to another. For example, when you publish an article, create a link to other articles you published that the reader may find useful. This will increase the popularity of your articles and draw more visitors, which in turn you can drive to your site.

Suggestion #4
Give people permission to reprint your article and share it with others. At the end of each article, you may want to include a small footer like this:

This article is free for reprint as long as it remains unchanged, the author is mentioned and our website URL is included.

Suggestion #5
Mention your articles on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networking sites. Each one of these sites has a section for "what are you doing now?" Add a comment such as, "I published a new article about (subject)" and then make sure you provide a link to the article.

Suggestion #6
Make sure you have a blog on your website, and then be sure you submit it to several of the top blog directories.
