One of the world's favorite birds, the Puffin is a clown among seabirds!

Of all the subjects of my photography over the years, birds have been my favorite subject. I am a bird watcher from way back having had the pleasure to bird watch in not only the United States, but in Eastern Europe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Mexico, and the islands.

The puffin is definitely a favorite of mine. It is an unmistakable bird with its black back and white underparts, and distinctive black head with large pale cheeks and a tall, flattened, brightly-coloured bill. Its comical appearance is heightened by its red and black eye-markings and bright orange legs. Used as a symbol for books and other items, this clown among seabirds is one of the world's favorite birds.

P.S. I just saw the most fantastic bird documentary -- Winged Migration!

Isn't the puffin adorable ... or not?

Puffins are any of three auk species (or alcids) in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak in the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. The Tufted Puffin was formerly placed in the genus Lunda.

All puffin species have large beaks. They will shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute) in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface. Similarities in body shape and colour between puffins and penguins are due to convergent evolution.

Grade 6 Up-Taylor has been studying puffins for over 20 years and uses his own extensive knowledge and that of his colleagues to give readers insight into these endearing birds. He admits that almost nothing is known of puffin life at sea, where they spend half the year, because they are scattered widely in very remote areas.

The information that is provided concerns the characteristics, mating and feeding habits, and communication of the Atlantic, horned, and tufted puffins gathered from extensive studies conducted during mating season on land. The author's writing style is more difficult than that of other entries in the series. The currency of the material and the wonderful color photographs make this title worthy of consideration for YA collections.

Project Puffin: How We Brought Puffins Back to Egg Rock

Project Puffin: How We Brought Puffins Back to Egg Rock

Amazon Price: $7.95 (as of 12/25/2009)Buy Now

Grades 3-6: Written in the first person, this illustrated book tells of Kress' determination to reintroduce puffins to Eastern Egg Rock, an island off the Maine coast. Explaining that the large bird colonies in the area had been decimated by hunters in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, Kress describes Project Puffin, which began in 1973, when he and his team of "Puffineers" moved a few puffin chicks from Newfoundland to Eastern Egg Rock.

After a number of years, the puffins raised in their new home began returning there to raise their young, effectively establishing the colony destroyed so many years before. Excellent full-color photographs on every page record the stages in the project, the sights on the island, and the lives of the birds. A good introduction to wildlife management and an informative look at puffins, this book would be even more useful for classroom units in conjunction with Giving Back the Earth by Pete Salmansohn.

Three Species of Puffin

  • Atlantic Puffin: Fratercula arctica
  • Horned Puffin: Fratercula corniculata
  • Tufted Puffin: Fratercula cirrhata

Family: Auk

:This article is about a family of birds. For the American ornithological journal, see The Auk. For other meanings, see AUK.

Auks are birds of the family Alcidae in the order Charadriiformes. They are superficially similar to penguins due to their black-and-white colours, their upright posture and some of their habits. Nevertheless they are not closely related to the penguins, but rather are an example of moderate convergent evolution.

In contrast to penguins, the modern auks are able to fly (with the exception of the recently extinct Great Auk). They are good swimmers and divers, but their walking appears clumsy. Due to their short wings auks have to flap their wings very quickly in order to fly. Extant auks range in size from the Least Auklet, at 85 g (3 oz) and 15 cm (6 in), to the Thick-billed Murre, at 1 kg (2¼ lb) and 45 cm (18 in).

Auks live on the open sea and only go ashore for breeding, although some species, like the Common Guillemot, spend a great part of the year defending their nesting spot from others.

Several species have different names in Europe and North America. The guillemots of Europe are murres in North America, if they occur in both continents, and the Little Auk becomes the Dovekie.

Some species, such as the Uria guillemots, nest in large colonies on cliff edges; others, like the Cepphus guillemots, breed in small groups on rocky coasts; and the puffins, auklets and some murrelets nest in burrows. All species except the Brachyramphus murrelets are colonial.

Atlantic Puffin at a glance

The Atlantic Puffin (''''') is a seabird species in the auk family. It is a pelagic bird that feeds primarily by diving for fish, but also eats other sea creatures, such as squid and crustaceans. Its most obvious characteristic is its brightly coloured beak during the breeding seasons. Also known as the Common Puffin, it is the only puffin species which is found in the Atlantic Ocean. The curious appearance of the bird, with its colourful huge bill and its striking piebald plumage, has given rise to nicknames such as "clown of the ocean" and "sea parrot"'.

Puffin Fever

A humourous look at the mating habits of the Atlantic Puffin. Typically, mating takes place at sea where the female is almost completely submerged. Beware the ubiquitous "third party." Sadly, the music "Fever" by Ray Charles and Nathalie Cole was the soundtrack, and people decided they didn't like it, so it was blocked, and now muted.

Puffins Climb, Penguins Rhyme

by Bruce McMillan

Puffins Climb, Penguins Rhyme

Amazon Price: $6.00 (as of 12/25/2009)Buy Now

Master photo-essayist McMillan finds fetching fun in a few feathered friends as he pairs likenesses of two avian species with rhyming, two-word captions. Inhabiting literally opposite ends of the earth, puffins (from the North Polar region) and penguins (native to Antarctica) share an endearing gawkiness, and McMillan's unadorned, crystalline photographs capture surprising humor and personality in the simplest of situations. Spreads alternate between the two varieties, presenting both single subjects and groups in representative activities-"Puffins walk. Puffins squawk. Penguins brawl. Penguins call."

The black-and-white birds' orange-toned beaks and feet lend intense splashes of color to the stark backgrounds-gray sea and rocks, clear blue skies, green grass. Though technically not of a feather, these birds flock together to provide an inviting nature study. Ages 2-6.

Horned Puffin at a glance

The Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) is an auk, similar in appearance to the Atlantic Puffin; this bird's bill is yellow at the base and red at the tip. It is a pelagic seabird that feeds primarily by diving for fish. It nests in colonies, often with other auks.

The yellow bill plate grows before the breeding season and is shed later. They have a small fleshy black "horn" above their eyes. They have a white face with a dark line extending from the back of the eye and red feet.

This species breeds on rocky islands off the coasts of Siberia, Alaska and British Columbia, in burrows, in rocky cavities or among rocks. It winters far out to sea. Feeding areas are usually located fairly far offshore from the nest. There is usually one chick and both parents feed the young.

Horned Puffins will return from hunting with several small fish in their beaks. They also eat squid and crustaceans.

The population of these birds has declined due to the introduction of rats onto some islands used for nesting.

There Once Was a Puffin

There Once Was a Puffin

Originally written more than 25 years ago, Jaques's Lear-like limerick makes a virtue of simplicity, affectingly conveying its message in just a few lines.

Living on an island surrounded by fish, a solitary Puffin ("Just the shape of a muffin") is pining away for want of a pal-"So he sat on his island,/ And he cried for a while, and/ He felt very lonely,/ And he felt very small." But the fish have the answer ("You can have us for playmates/ Instead of for tea!"), and now the Puffin subsists on a landlubber's diet-with company at every meal.

Kvasnosky's (Pink, Red, Blue-What Are You?) full-spread illustrations-rendered as crisply outlined swaths of clear, bright colors-add personality and pizazz. Her carefully composed pictures match the poem's forthright tone; together, text and art relay a beguiling tale of friendship found in unexpected form. Ages 2-4.
