The Best Pug Sweaters

Sometimes dog sweaters have guides that suggest which size for each breed. While this may be useful for some breeds, it's not accurate for pugs. Adult pugs can be very different in terms of size and girth. My girl usually wears a size large, while my boy wears a medium or even a small. It also depends on the brand, so the best way to find out is to measure.

It's important to measure your pug before buying a sweater, or you may have to return it because it's too small for her chest, or too long. There are two main measurements to make. The first is around your pug's chest, right behind her front legs. You can either use a flexible measuring tape or a string. Then you can put the string beside a ruler to see how many inches around your pug is. Make sure not to pull the string too tight. You want a nice, loose fit. Consider that your pug needs to fit all her lovely fur inside the sweater too!

Take this number and check it against the size chart of the sweater. If it's close, always go the next size up.

The second measurement is neck-to-tail. Measure from the spot where the base of her neck meets her body (right over her front legs) down to the base of her tail. If the sweater is much longer than this measurement, then the sweater might flip back up, or cover up her tail, or worse, cause potty interference!

Look at the size that you chose based on your pug's girth. How does the length compare? Different brands make sweaters of very different lengths, so don't take this for granted.

When shopping for a sweater, make sure you have recent measurements, especially if your puppy isn't full grown yet.
