Our youth-oriented society experienced  changes  in the 90's as the bulk of the population approached middle age.  The shock waves have yet to settle, with marketers and researchers and every conceivable business scrambling to get or keep those Baby Boom dollars.  This same group of people has recently been dubbed "The Botox Generation".

The early days of the aging crisis brought pioneers into a field called "Anti-Aging", researchers who sought to alleviate the discomforts of an aging face and body for the 90 million plus Americans who were facing life changes like menopause.  Marketers also rushed to meet the needs of these people, or at least to tell a story that would seem to be the answer to avoiding aging.  Celebrity physicians rose to acclaim made millions of dollars endorsing "miracle" products which ranged from foods to skin creams to exercise techniques and yet, we continue to age!

Observing the phenomenon as it evolved Dr. Pugliese understood that anti-aging was an incorrect term for a field of study required to accomodate the needs of this generation.  "Anti" by definition is negative—in a physical sense, if one is not aging, one is dead! For the first time, we have a population of people who have fifty years behind them, and conceivably, fifty years ahead of them.  Dr. Peter Pugliese  prefers to view the steps necessary for the successful transition through all of life's phases  as Planned Aging" TM. 

In addition to changing the language by which aging is defined, Dr. Pugliese has also boldly created an entirely new classification of skin typing. Recognizing that the old "dry/normal/oily" model was born of marketing in the 1960's rather than physiology in this millennium, Dr. Pugliese's classification of skin by hormonal Isotypes has given practitioners a superior tool by which to gain insight into caring for the aging patient/client.  This revolutionary concept, along with the basics of a protocol implementing a Planned Aging care program, was introduced to the professions of esthetics, plastic surgery and dermatology with the 2005 release of the textbook, Advanced Professional Skin Care, Medical Edition, by Peter T. Pugliese, M.D.

To Dr. Pugliese, among the most fascinating work of his research life has been the identification of cellular structures. Every skin care professional has encountered diagrams of the skin in books and lectures. Yet in his own laboratory, Dr. Pugliese found a way to create astounding views of the biology of the cell. In the early days of experimentation, Dr. Pugliese created these beautiful photographs with a tissue culture, using a special microscope and various fluorescent medical stains which would react with specific structures, such as lipids.

Tissue culture remains a fascinating world of study for Dr. Pugliese and has formed the basis of many of the theories upon which future discoveries will be made.

Peter T. Pugliese, MD, earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1957 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The following year, he entered private practice in rural Berks County, Pennsylvania, where he practiced family medicine for 22 years. Since 1972, Dr. Pugliese has engaged in the study of skin physiology and has made discoveries which have influenced the course of professional skin care around the globe.

In the course of his service as a community physician, Dr. Pugliese conducted a methadone treatment clinic in the late 1960s for heroin addicts while serving as the consultant physician to the Berks County Prison. For his progressive work in treating drug addiction, he was awarded the B'nai Brith Americanism Award and the Italian Citizenship Award. In 1966, when a patient's arm was severed in a farming accident, Dr. Pugliese participated in one of the first successful surgical limb reattachments attempted in the United States.

Dr. Pugliese did postgraduate research at the Johnson Foundation of Biophysics and held academic positions at the Hershey Medical School and at the University of Pennsylvania.

He conducted cancer research on the bioenergetics of cell division under a grant from the Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He holds ten patents, including functional raw materials, bovine teat dip and anticellulite hosiery.

Dr. Pugliese is a member of the Society of Bioengineering and the Skin, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society of Investigative Dermatology and has given more than 125 presentations at scientific meetings worldwide. He was awarded the Maison de Navarre Gold Medal, the highest honor of the National Society of Cosmetic Chemists for his contributions to the field of cosmetic chemistry. Dr. Pugliese has contributed chapters to over a dozen books and published over 60 scientific papers. He has authored four books, including, in 1990, the first textbook written for estheticians by a physician, Advanced Professional Skin Care, to bridge esthetics and medicine with a common language. With the publication of this Medical Edition, Dr. Pugliese continues to strive toward a referral-based skin care industry by educating practitioners at all levels.

Dr. Pugliese founded the Circadia Skin Care Institute in 2003, where he teaches advanced courses for the skin care professional in skin physiology, histology, biochemistry, cosmetic chemistry and medical esthetics. His goal is to elevate the practice of esthetics to the status of a profession through higher standards of education in the United States.
