At first a text message or email, can serve as a reminder that you are still interested at him/her. A simple "hello, how are you" can make them warm up to you again, without being too invasive. This message will simply open a channel of communication, but it certainly does not guarantee anything more.

Continuity is important: you should continue to communicate in the same way for a while. Usually the first few messages will be more impersonal, but gradually they will become more personal and meaningful.

The next step is a telephone contact. If you have a genuine interest for the other person (rather than just the selfish need to get him/her back), you will create a relaxed and pleasant environment that will make your ex feel more at ease.

At this point you can suggest something that your former partner will be interested in, like going to the cinema or the theatre. However, you should never be pushy and try to invade the space of the other person, because you will create the same oppressive conditions that led to the separation in the first place.
