Remember, on those cartoons and I think even on Captain Kangaroo, that rope hanging from the air with a sign on it that said something like "pull me" or "don't pull". Who ever was looking at it new something bad was about to happen either way but it got pulled any way. The resulted ending ranged from the harmless ping pong balls to a road kill flattening anvil.
