Sam Puma went to high school during the 50's when America was beginning it's space program. Sam dreamed of becoming an astonaut. His father wanted him to be a doctor. After graduating from Hahnemann Medical School he joined the Air Force and successfully combined the two pursuits, first as a flight surgeon for NASA and later as a jet fighter pilot. Then it happened - the necessity. The T33 training jet Sam was in didn't have airsickness bags. After a series of maneuvers, Sam desperately needed one. Out of necessity, Sam filled one of his gloves. The other pilots had their laughs, but Sam wasn't going to give up his passion for flight because of motion sickness. Again, out of necessity, Sam developed what is now called the Puma Method, a series of conditioning exercises which raise a person's tolerance level to motion sickness-producing activities.

Dr. Puma developed and perfected the Puma Method over his 36 years as a physician in the aerospace industry.

According to Dr. Puma, most people suffer from motion sickness. Motion sickness is brought on while reading in a moving vehicle, riding in a small boat or cruise ship, or flying in a plane. In some people, this may result in an overload of too much and conflicting sensory information. The body responds with the symptoms of motion sickness, including nausea, light-headedness and headache.

I am motion sick all day every day for over a year ! it all started when I was thrown off a tube while boating and had vertigo for 2 months, then got a bad cold ( i work as RN in an ER) then developed extreme nausea and dizziness. All the tests look ok expect VNG. I have had motion sickness since I have been a small child. I am left with extreme all day feelings of motion sickness ....even when not in any motion !

For the most part no -- not in moving vehicles or at sea. I do get a little lightheaded with heights such as at the top of a fire tower or looking off a high cliff into a canyon -- "lightheaded" = probably from anxiety of a little fear of heights but not real vertigo or motion sickness.

The Puma Method - available on DVD

Safe, simple and effective exercises you do in your own home...

The Puma Method, available on DVD, is very easy to do and takes no more than 15 minutes a day. The exercises are powerful and must be followed exactly according to instructions, which are given clearly and concisely. As well, they are demonstrated to perfection. On the letter I received with my DVD, Dr. Puma hand-wrote that I should watch the DVD twice before doing the exercises and listen closely, that "each word was carefully chosen." If you follow the instructions, you cannot fail.

Dr. Puma is forthcoming regarding the limitations of the method. I contacted him about my migraine-associated vertigo. He checked and double checked that I understood that, although he had some testimonials from MAVers who had improvement after using the Method, he developed it for motion sickness and if I used it for MAV, I would be going into "unchartered waters." As well, on the DVD he states that it will not help motion sickness that is brought on by extreme anxiety of flying.

My Experience with The Puma Method

I felt cared for...

Dr. Puma knows the method inside and out. He created it and perfected it. He cares that it be executed correctly and that people heal. I felt Dr. Puma's caring and watchful presence while viewing the DVD and while doing the exercises. He was available by email and was interested with my progress. I never had the feeling of being left on my own and I think that accounts for some portion of the method's success - all for a mere $49.95.

I seriously think Dr. Puma should raise his prices. For anyone who suffers with motion sickness, this video is priceless! Results may be seen in as little as two weeks and they never totally go away. If symptoms start to re-surface, just give yourself a Puma "tune-up" and you're on your way again.

Not only is it easy to do, as well as effective, it is also safe! No drugs - no side effects. The method uses your body's natural mechanism of habituation to prevent motion sickness. Dr. Puma uses a great example of habituation in the video, but I'm not going to give it away, you'll have to buy the video yourself to see it. I'll give my own. I'm a ballet dancer. The first time I did a series of turns across the floor and then came to a stop I walked around like a drunk. It took several minutes for me to regain my equilibrium. With practice, my body became habituated to the movement of turning and it wasn't long before I experienced no dizziness at all. Dr. Puma developed a specific series of exercises that habituate you to motion sickness!

Sam Puma went to high school in Pennsylvania in the 50's when America was beginning its space program. He dreamed of becoming an astronaut and wrote his senior paper on how he would build a rocket-powered spacecraft to fly to the moon. He likes to say that it wasn't too far off the plan ultimately used by NASA.

As per Sam's father's wishes, he went to medical school, which he enjoyed, but longed to combine his medical training with his love for aeronautics. Thus, Sam joined the Air Force at the beginning of his senior year, during which time he also received his private pilot's license.

Onward and Upward

Fulfilling his dreams...

In the Air Force, his first assignment was to the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. There he served as a medical monitor for space flights and provided medical care for the astronauts and their families. Not only did he have the honor of serving the astronauts, but he especially enjoyed that part of his work which involved flying the skies with them.

Sam's interest for flying was appreciated by the astronauts, several of whom recommended him for a special training program. Through this program Dr. Puma became one of the very few physicians ever chosen by the Air force to become a jet fighter pilot.

And he Just Keeps Going

Necessity feeds Innovation...

During his career in the military, Dr. Puma also devoted his energy to crew systems and life support research and development. After retiring from the Air force with the rank of Colonel, Dr. Puma joined Northrop Aircraft Division as a senior scientist. While at Northrop, he was responsible for concept development and project management for aero-medical, life support, and advanced fighter crew protection systems. Dr. Puma's innovative work on advanced systems resulted in a number of patents and scientific publications.

Dr. Puma says that so far 800 people have used his Method.

He continues his work in Southern California. When I asked him what he's into these days, he gave me a list:

1. Determining the effectiveness of Puma Method for prevention of simulator/cyber-sickness.
2. Building a proof of concept "G" induced loss of consciousness sensor.
