Pumpkin Carving and Free Designs

The longest lasting Jack o' Lantern that we had in our household was not carved out at all.The pumpkin was left completely intact. The face was drawn on with marker. This pumpkin lasted well into Thanksgiving. But if you want to cut out a face or design on your pumpkin, then it has never been easier. You can buy a pumpkin carving kit complete with stencils. This is a vast improvement over your parents or grandparents days when they carved out a pumpkin with a knife. You can make your own designs or download free pumpkin stencils online.

1. Cut an opening in the top or bottom of a pumpkin. Keep the top piece to use as a lid.

2. Clean and scrape the inside to where the wall of the pumpkin wall is no more than one inch thick.

3. Cut out the pattern or make your own out of a piece of paper. Unless you are handily without a pattern.

4. If using a pattern, use a tool called the poker. Poke through the paper making dots along each outline on the pattern.

5. Start sawing with a pumpkin carver or knife around the outline of the dots. Always hold the carver at a right angle to the pumpkin.

6. Light a candle inside the pumpkin, then close the lid. Quickly put out the flame and cut a small hole where a spot had blackened inside the lid. This will let the smoke and heat escape while a candle glows inside.
