Pumpkins! There's More to Them Than Pumpkin Pie!

Pumpkins--the big, usually orange, gourds that are most prevalent in our fields, supermarkets, and homes near the end of September through December (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). They are also squash. Of the family Cucurbitaceae and the genus Cucurbita, pumpkins have a variety of species and numerous "cultivars" of those that can range in size from less than a pound to over 1000 pounds. These cultivars also range in shapes, colors, and appearances (smooth or ribbed).

Pumpkins are thought to have originated in North America--with the oldest known evidence of pumpkin-related seeds dated at between 7000 and 5500 B.C. found in Mexico.

There's More to Pumpkins than Just Pumpkin Pie and Jack o'lanterns

Pumpkin Seeds? Yup... and even more!

Small pumpkins resemble the decorative gourds (they ARE gourds) - good for table, mantle, and other home decorationsWhat's the fall season in North America without Pumpkin Pie? And, of course, around the end of October, you'll find Jack O'Lanterns (pumpkins hollowed out and carved to make creepy faces and other images when lit from inside). Pumpkin pie really starts showing up on tables from mid-October through the Christmas season as a special seasonal dessert.

Ah, pumpkins ... not too many fruits you can have a whack at carving it up and lighting it up and then scooping out the entrails for pie. I always loved grandma's pumpkin pie the most!
