Pumpkins! There's More to Them Than Pumpkin Pie!
Pumpkins--the big, usually orange, gourds that are most prevalent in our fields, supermarkets, and homes near the end of September through December (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). They are also squash. Of the family Cucurbitaceae and the genus Cucurbita, pumpkins have a variety of species and numerous "cultivars" of those that can range in size from less than a pound to over 1000 pounds. These cultivars also range in shapes, colors, and appearances (smooth or ribbed).
Pumpkins are thought to have originated in North America--with the oldest known evidence of pumpkin-related seeds dated at between 7000 and 5500 B.C. found in Mexico.

- Ah, pumpkins ... not too many fruits you can have a whack at carving it up and lighting it up and then scooping out the entrails for pie. I always loved grandma's pumpkin pie the most!
