In 1999, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up purchased Hawaiian Punch and thought of re-using the Punchy mascot. It was thought that Punchy was a rather violent character for a product aimed at youth since his reputation is based on his punch. Great consideration was given to see how or even if Punchy could be used in a less offensive manner. Teenagers remembered the original version of Punchy which meant that he was still a valuable asset to the company. It was determined that his main appeal was his uniqueness and his punch which was not so much an act of violence as a metaphor for overwhelming refreshment.

In 2003, Punchy had a makeover to appeal more to the youth of today.

TV ACRES: Advertising Mascots > Punchy & Oaf (Hawaiian Punch)
1961, the Atherton-Privett ad agency created a successful 20-second commercial to advertise the red punch drink known as Hawaiian Punch®. The original "Punchy and Oaf" ad featured a short little Hawaiian guy wearing a grass hat and a vertically-striped shirt who held a glass of Hawaiian Punch. When a tourist named Oaf (who was dressed in a flowered shirt and hat) approached Punchy, he was greeted with the seemingly generous statement "Hey, How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?"

Amazon Customer Review:

"This almost everything, (but not) pop culture book, is really very good, almost great. It has classic TV shows, movies, top 40 music, Fads,
commercials, classic toy's, classic candy bars, great Icons, comics, and much more, popular and not very popular, about stuff from the 1950's to 1990's. Babyboomers should have fun browsing in this book, but younger and older should like this book also.

The biggest problem with this book, is putting it down.

A book with, The Beatles, Jonny Quest, Coca Cola, Captain Kangaroo, Gilligan's Island, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mini Skirts, The Flintstones, and much much more in one book can't be all bad. Almost everything? Almost, and almost everybody, should have fun reading this book.
