Contemporary English Drama in Pune
I get to know of English drama in Pune quite early. I'll post what I know about contemporary efforts in English drama here. To check out my background, go to my website, http://deepakmorris.webs.com.
New scripts, new ventures in English Drama in Pune, India... whatever I find or know will be here.
I embrace "Hinglish" drama. It's the way we speak, so why not? Hence, "Malai Marke", Hindi in a lens about English Drama in Pune.
Explaining "Malai Marke" to a non-Hindi speaking audience is tough, though. It refers to sponsors' and patrons' demands to deliver theatre on call without factoring the cost and time of rehearsals.
"Ek" means "one".
The actual phrase one hears in Indian tea shops is, "Ek chai, malai marke." The patron asks for a cup of tea with cream. That gets delivered pretty quick in a tea shop, as you can imagine. Tea shops specialise in serving tea real quick.

"Yoneechyaa Maneechya Gujgoshti", is a Marathi translation by Vandana Khare of the internationally acclaimed play "The ------ Monologues". This translation has been widely appreciated for its cultural sensitivity.
Originally developed by Eve Ensler as an output of her research with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships, and violence against women, it has been translated into 46 languages.
Vandana is flooded with requests from women who have expressed their desire to perform in the play and thus share that platform for expression. All the actors in the present cast got involved in the performance after initially coming across the play as audience!
"Yoneechyaa Maneechya Gujgoshti" went on stage in April 2009 as a beneficiary show for a group of HIV+ women.
Anyone interested in working on or understanding, the issues of gender and sexuality needs to see this play which is a welcome effort to break the silence around these issues.
