Socializing Puppies

Puppies need socializing from a very young age. The term "socialize" can best be described as exposing puppies to new experiences and varied experiences. All of these experiences should be aimed at preparing the puppy to b a well balanced and sociable adult dog, familiar with humans and human "contraptions" and also familiar with dogs, dog body language, and other animals as well. The process of socializing a puppy is mch like the process of bringing up a child, exposing the child to as much stimulation as possible to improve knowledge, brain power, and physical and mental capablities.

A responsible breeder will recognize that even the youngest of puppies needs to be exposed to varied experiences. This is a major reason why "puppy mill puppies" are not the best possibility for a pet puppy. All too often they are brought up in an environment which is not conducive to learning new things and often does not expose the puppy to stress in the proper manner. Furthermore, they are often seperated from their siblings and their dam a an ealy age, which can lead to a great deal of frustration for the dog and the new owner later on, since puppies that are seperated from their "families" at too young an age do not understand the rules of behavior in the "dog kingdom".

This probably sounds strange but it is a proven fact that young puppies exposed to certain types of physical stress will respond better as adults to stress. There is in fact a scientific method of  exposing young puppies to stress in a beneficial manner. It involves such things as picking the puppy up, tipping upside down for a few seconds, exposing its body to a cold surface (this often happens during the process of daily weighing the puppy, which is part of a responsible breeder's routine, and placing the puppy into a strange environment (also part of a responsible breeders' routine, as they daily clean the puppy's box and place clean papers and clean blanket material into the puppy living area.)

From the very early exposure of young puppies to changes in their daily living to the gradual introduction of human children and adults' interaction, tone of voice, play equipment to explore, the list becomes as varied as the imagination of the breeder. And from the breeder to the new home, experiences that broaden the life of the puppy should continue. This is the process of "socialization".

Along with "socializing" the new puppy should be trained well while young. Often it is not possible to attend a puppy kindergarten class or obedience class. Some great FREE lessons can be obtained from THE KINGDOM OF PETS. You can also find a number of good puppy training tips at my blog Knewf's News

The "Super Dog" program

The U.S. military devised a program to ensure that puppies would be capable as adults of facing stress in a balanced and physically relaxed manner. This program includes early puppy exposure to mild forms of stress.
Taken from the Sierra Working dogs web page (http://www.sierraworkingdogs.com/index_puppyraising.htm) I quote:
After years of research their studies confirmed that there are specific periods early in the puppy's life when neurological stimulation has optimum results. The stimulation program involves handling puppies once each day while performing a series of five exercises. The exercises, involving minor stresses, take into account that during the first weeks the pups are aware of only heat, cold, and pain."
The actual "super dog" program follows this basic format: at specific ages, the puppy is exposed to various body positions (head up, head down, rolled over), specific stressors such as tactical stimulation (between the toes) and thermal variations of the temperature.
As I stated earlier, a puppy that is raised by a responsible breeder will almost automatically be exposed to these stressors in the process of being cared for on a daily basis by the breeder. Breeders usually take care to change the papers or blankets daily, thus removing the puppy during that time to a diferent location (often colder) and the puppies are usually weighed daily, which also places them in different body positions and in different thermal environments. (I used to weigh my puppies by placing them in a tote bag and weighing them on one of those hanging scales that bakers and old fashioned meat shops use)Of course this placed them in quite an unusual situation, at the bottom of a dark tote bag! Swinging around besides! But of necessity they do need to be weighed on a regular basis. his is often something that a puppy mill breeders simply won't bother to take the time to do, either the puppy "makes it" or he doesn't.
MUCH socializing should be done by the breeder before the puppy ever arrives in your home. It is wise to know the breeder of your puppy and visit the facilities and see where they are whelped and how they are raised. No responsible breeder will refuse this of a potential puppy owner.
