Puppies, Toilet Training

One of the first things that a puppy should learn is its name, but puppies toilet training is the next most important. The puppy's bodily functions affect your life and it needs to learn the right place to relieve itself. This can be easy if you know what you are doing, but it can be difficult if you do not.

Just like children, puppies must mature mentally and physically before they can control their bodily functions. Young puppies have to develop their muscles for bladder control and they must develop brains so that they can be trained. Puppies younger than 12 weeks old are difficult to train. but this is not impossible. As they grow older it will take less time for puppies toilet training because of their development. A puppy that is six months old could only take only a few days to train.

Training does not happen overnight. It might take some time to for you to succeed. It is important to keep at it and not to lose your patience. Dogs learn by repetition and any kind of training is based on reward and correction. This is very true with puppies toilet training, they have to know exactly what you want them to do. Show the puppy the place to go and where not to go.

It is a good idea to start with paper training. Use a newspaper and teach the puppy to go on the newspaper. After it has learned that you can start teaching it to go outside.

Watch the puppy and observe what its habits are. Puppies usually have "to go" around 15 to 30 minutes after eating. Observe the puppy at this time. You need to watch constantly during puppies toilet training, however, this might be difficult if you have to go to work or to other activities. Don't give up, it might just take you a little longer for the training.

Clean up messes completely so that the puppy doesn't get the scent of where it went the last time. Dogs like to return to the same spot to urinate or eliminate. Use one of the products designed to clean and remove the odor. If you don't have these products, use soap and water and then club soda. Take the dirty rags outside because they have the scent on them.

Remember these things about puppies toilet training:
- a puppy must grow a bit so that it can control its functions and can be trained
- be patient and consistent and don't lose your temper
- reward and correct; use exaggerated praise if the puppy does the right thing
- observe the puppy and learn its habits
- use paper training
- clean up messes quickly and take the rags outside
