Puppy House Training Schedule - Housetraining Is Impossible Without One

Ranked #2,899 in Pets & Animals, #74,874 overall

Why You Absolutely Need A Puppy House Training Schedule

You've just brought a new puppy or dog into your family (that's my new pup Simon in the picture). Have you decided how to approach house training?

If you want to get the pup trained as soon as possible, start thinking about a puppy house training schedule. You can't schedule everything, but you can set up basic activities and times when the (elimination) activities will occur.

Getting To The Ultimate Goal
Believe it or not, a schedule will minimize accidents. The greater the number of accidents, the longer it will take to arrive at the ulimate goal - a housebroken pup.

Unfortunately, even if you're the best scheduler ever, you can't anticipate everything, For example, new puppies don't pee and poop on your schedule every time. When the pup is circling your new living room rug,he's most likely not following the schedule.

House Training Activities You Can Schedule

You can create a puppy house training schedule based on the fact that you can anticipate he will eliminate as follows:

  • When he gets up in the morning.
  • After he eats.
  • After a nap (they are predictable).
  • After he plays or exercises for more than a few minutes
  • Before he goes to sleep for the night.

Depending on his age, he'll need to go out at night several times. The formula for the number of hours between outings is (puppy age in months plus 1) hours. A 2-month old pup will go out about every 3 hours over night. Don't be alarmed, this is only a guideline.

A Few Tips
You will adjust your puppy house training schedule as the puppy matures and can control his eliminations. Supposedly a puppy is ready about 16 weeks of age. At this point, you may notice that he sleeps through the night and doesn't need to go outside as often.

If you fail to adjust the timing for outings as the pup learns to hold his eliminations, you will need to gradually lengthen the amount of time beween outings OR let the pup tell you when it's time.

My other dog Alvin barks when he needs to go out. Simon learned to ring a bell or sometimes just stands by the door. There have been a few presents on the rug in front of the door while dinner was being made.

Changes To The Puppy House Training Schedule

Some Days The Schedule Gets Blown Away

You've wriiten a stellar puppy house training schedule for the week. You got fancy and scheduled the puppy's medications too. Not a bad idea!

You're prepared, but you cannot prepare for all puppy-related happenings.

Here's a few schedule busters:

- You forgot the vet appointment on Wednesday morning. No problem - make sure the pup eliminates before getting into and out of the car on the trip to and from the vet.

- Your pup is peeing frequently and the amounts can best be described as mere dribbles. He might have a urinary tract infection. Take a urine sample to the vet and get it tested, Face it - the puppy house training schedule is REALLY blown until the peeing returns to what's been considered normal.

- You took the pup to the groomer. She gave him an unlimited supply of water. It makes sense for the groomer to provide water, but puppies like Simon can drink way too much. Simon peed 5 times in 2 hours after that trip. The grooming costs $45 and one puppy accident.

- You've recently changed the puppy's kibbles and forgot to transition to the new food. The puppy's reaction - frequent and runny poop deposits.

Sample Puppy House Training Schedule

Simon's House Training Schedule at 4 Months of Age

The following table shows Simon's current House training Schedule at 4 months of age. Obviously, it can be followed only by someone who does not work during the day. The reason for the high number of visits outdoors is to prevent accidents, something you do not want to happen. An accident is a backward step toward the goal of a housebroken puppy.

Don't be discouraged by this sample puppy house training schedule. Sometimes Simon makes it through to 5:00 am without crying to go out. Admittedly, he goes outside frequently. He is not reached the maturity point where he can control himself so that I can lengthen the times between trips outdoors.

Puppy House Training Schedule - Summary

Write It Down!

Your puppy house training schedule should be written and posted, especially if you have other family members caring for the puppy. Use an Excel spreadsheet and post it to the refrigerator.

Why does it need to be written? Every one knows what needs to be done. This is a good way to avoid accidents because some one is always supervising the pup. Communication is key to making puppy house training successful.

Have You Thought About Puppy Obedience Training?

The Time To Start Obedience Training Is Right Now!

housetraining a puppy - MarleyPuppy Owners get so wrapped up in house training a puppy that they forget about other REALLY important training:

Puppy Obedience Training
What if you have a perfectly housetrained dog who acts like Marley from the movie Marley and Me? That's Marley in the picture - eating the couch!

Who Cares About Obedience Training?
Frankly, many dog owners ignore this part of their puppy's training and then the dog pays for it later - by ending up in a shelter.

Some owners feel they are perfectly capable of training their dogs and need no other guidance than their own expertise. I felt the same way; got through Sit, Shake, and Down, and then miserably failed with the critical commands: Stay, Come, and Leash Training.

I found that I needed to start at the beginning of puppy obedience training with an expert. But an expert costs $75 per dollar. Whoops!
