Puppy Leash Training
What you will find here is some very effective tips on leash training your dog, what leashes you should and should not use when doing this training, enjoy.
Puppy Leash Training - What leashes should I use?
There are some good ones, and some really bad ones for training.
Pro:
- Meant to give a dog some roaming room, and still be able to reel him in.
- Has a good hand on it for holding
- A lot of corner stores have places to tie dogs up that are meant for these
Cons:
- Not good to use with 2 hands which you will need for dog leash training
- Can be broken if a large dog pulls to hard on it (it will not do that once it is trained
Leather Leash:
Pros:
- Very Sturdy
- Has Good grip for 2 hands; lots to grab on to.
- Meant for large and small dogs, very hard to destroy
Cons:
- Non-Retractable or Extendable ; not a good roaming leash
As you can see, the leash you want to use is a single length leather leash. As you will have the most control over your dog this way, and can keep him in line easier than you can a retractable one.

Puppy Leash Training - Learning the Heel Command

This is the main thing you want to do when you are puppy leash training and that is to learn to heel command. Not only will they heel while on a leash, they will also learn to heel while off the leash. So in effect you kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
The whole trick to teaching your dog the heel command is hold the leash with both hands, one on the top, while the other holds a length of it, to shorten the leash. You keep your dog right next to you.
As you pull the dog beside you, you say in a commanding voice " Heel!", and then start walking. Continue to say this, and hold him close as you walk, if he tries to go and sniff something, then say the command and pull him close again.
Like all training, you must be consistent, teaching him to heel on the same side, and never letting him go away from the heel position.
Eventually once you say the command, he will heel without hesitation.
Puppy Leash Training - Or is it a Puppy at all?
Well, take a closer look at this, and that saying just goes right out the window.
Puppy Leash Training - The right time to train
When is the right time to start dog leash training?

Well, the best time to start puppy leash training, would be after it has gone to the bathroom, and done its business. Do about 30 minutes of training this way, not letting him out of the heel position the entire time, and when he tries to pull away, you repeat the command.
Try not to prevent your dog from going to the bathroom, this is a bad way to train your dog, because, he will start to associate the heel command with a negative re-enforcement to go do its business. This is certainly not what you want.
So, let it relieve itself before training (this pretty much goes for all training), and you will have a happy structured dog who will obey your every command.
