When learning how to potty train a puppy it does not need to be a struggle. Potty training your puppy should start as soon as you bring your new addition home. If you follow some basic training tips, your puppy will be potty trained in no time.

A puppy is essentially a baby. It should not be punished when it has an accident ( you would not punish a baby for having an accident, would you!). Instead, you should focus on praising your puppy when he does the right thing. You should praise, praise, praise and try to keep away from punishments.

When learning how to potty train your puppy you should get to know the "signs" or the "look" that tells you your puppy needs to "go". He may start running around in circles, scratching at the door or sniffing the floor. Just watch him for a while and you will get to recognise the signs.

As soon as your puppy starts showing these signs, bring him outside straight away. Stay close to him so you can see when he goes and give him lots of praise immediately. You need to praise him as he is going potty so that he knows he is doing the right thing. Try to use some commands when you bring him outside such as "go potty" or something similar so he will associate going outside with doing his business.

This technique should get you started with the basic puppy training methods. Keep persevering and you will have your puppy potty trained.

Potty training puppies should not have to be a continual and painful experience. It is a gradual process so stick with it.

It can take 5 or 6 months or longer and it is the most significant initial best step in making both you and your new puppy happy.

You can help keep the mess to a minimum by putting down paper for your puppy to relieve himself on, but it will take extra training for your puppy to know this is for emergencies.

When accidents eventually happen, do not get annoyed -- just clean up and disinfect the area.

Potty training puppies is not hard, but you do need to avoid getting into bad habits that may later bring about problems for you or your puppy.

If your dog has an accident, it's not because he's incapable or unintelligent, it's because he has not been properly trained. For successful dog house training never yell or punish your dog for a potty accident in the house rather praise and reward him with a treat (cookie) when he relieves himself outdoors.
