Puppy Obedience Commands - Training Your New Puppy

Remember the excitement surrounding bringing your new puppy home? You think you're going to have the most well-behaved cute puppy ever.

And then reality hits. Your bundle of joy has quickly turned into a pain in the butt. He wakes you up several times a night, poops and pees everywhere, bites everything, and chews your favorite shoes. Given the situation, the dreaded words "puppy obedience commands," come to mind.

But training your new puppy doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, it can be fun and easy, given the right tools and command timing. In my case the right tool is a dog and puppy training DVD called It's Pawsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD by Beth Ostrowski-Parks. The DVD contains a 5-week schedule for command training.

See my review of this training DVD.

It's PAWSible! shows you all the basic puppy obedience training commands. Sit and Down are easy. Others are a wee bit more difficult, like Leave It. This command is essential for puppy training. How many times have you wanted your pup to stay away from _______ (you fill in the blanks).

The reason Leave It is more difficult is that it is taught in stages. So the next few sections (Puppyy Training Tip - Leave It 1, 2 and 3) describe the various phases of teaching the command. The origin of this information is the DVD described above.

The puppy training tip for Leave It - make it easy by teaching it in phases.

Puppy Obedience Commands - Leave It 1

Say Leave It once.

You need a leash and some treats for Puppy Training Tip - Leave It 1.

Put the leash on the pup and hold the leash in your left hand..

Issue a Sit or Down command.

Flash the treat in front of the pup's nose.

Say Leave It ONCE.

Put the treat on the ground in front of the pup.

Hold the pup in the Sit position for a few seconds.

Say OK and allow the puppy to get the treat.

Repeat this several times. Your pup will begin to anticipate the release and eventually will learn the restraint necessary to ensure the command works. You more times you do it, the less he will strain to get the treat.

This Is The Hard Part - You May Want To Use The Leash!

Issue a Sit command.

Flash the treat in front of the pup's nose.

Say Leave It ONCE.

Put the treat on the ground in front of the pup.

Say OK when the pup LOOKS AT YOU and ONLY when he looks at you. In the picture above, Alvin is looking at me before his release (OK).

How do you get him to look at you? Most dogs will get anxious because you're not saying okay. Sooner or later he'll look at you. Then and only then do you release him. Using a leash for this phase is a good idea.

Doesn't this puppy training tip for Leave It sound easy?

I've got one puppy (alvin) who'll look at me every time and then get the treat when released. The other pup (Simon) is just finishing up Phase 1. I'm about to let him off the leash or just grab his collar for Phase 2.

The It's Pawsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD shows the various phases of this command in action. You can see how shelter dogs react to Leave It!
