Puppy Mill Survivor and Rescue Stories

Rescue Success!

A puppy mill is a mass breeding facility where dogs are neglected, given little food, water, no exercise, little to no vet care, and are kept in small, cramped spaces. As a result, dogs are frightened, depressed, wary of humans, malnourished, and many other horrible things. Words cannot describe some of the horrors that are found in puppy mills. Very little thought is given into healthy breeding and many mill puppies have congenital and other health problems.

I also want to focus on the strays and unwanted dogs who were rescued by people who have lovingly taken them into their homes and lives. Dogs escape, dogs are dumped on the side of the road, it can be a sad situation. I want to celebrate the rescues and their rescuers!

My focus is here is on the positive. I want to feature successful puppy mill rescue stories, groups who are fighting against these mills, and events that promote awareness. I live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, an area that is a HUGE hotspot for puppy mills. I belong to an anti-puppy mill group called United Against Puppy Mills and volunteer my time to helping end these atrocities. I also want to feature dogs that have been rescued off the street where they have been dumped by irresponsible people who now have loving homes. All the photos of dogs ones that I have taken and the stories are ones that I have learned from their rescuers.

Ranger the Shiba Inu

One lucky dog!

RangerRanger is a shiba inu that was rescued by the good people at Heart United for Animals (HUA) based out of Nebraska. Ranger was a mill dog who was eventually adopted by the couple from the organization who rescued him. Who can resist that face!?

I wanted Ranger to be first because he had such a good, sweet nature for a rescued mill dog. He loved the attention he received and was more than happy to smile for me. Ranger is one happy boy!

Jason the Dachshund

Dachshund Rescue Spokesdog

JasonJason is a rescue of Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue and was a Lancaster County, PA puppy mill breeder. He was kept in a cage during the years he was at the puppy mill and had many health problems, including back problems, and that's why he wears the brace. He rescuers decided to keep Jason as a "spokesdog" because of his spirit and friendliness. They are also paying for all his medical bills and care.

Rescues are always looking for donations, monetary or for things like food, toys, blankets, etc. Why not find a rescue near you and see what you can do? Most are non-profit and depend on the generosity of donors.

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive. ~Gilda Radner

Harley the Pug

Spirit in the Face of Hardship

HarleyHarley here is truly a sad case. He was rescued from a puppy mill. He is blind in one eye, and the other, though he can see with it, has popped out of his socket twice. He is lame in both of his front legs, but he gets around pretty well. He scoots around on his doggy elbows. Through his difficulties, Harley has a great attitude and resilient spirit.

When this photo was taken, Harley was looking for his forever home, but has since found one! He lives with the mother of his rescuers and has a happy, healthy, and safe life. He was rescued by the hard-working people at A Tail To Tell Puppy Mill Rescue out of Mount Gretna, PA.

Jacob the Large Munsterlander

A Rare Treat

JacobFirst off, Large Musterlanders are not a common breed that is found here in the United States, but Jacob's owner found him wandering on the side the road. She picked him up and wondered what this huge black and white dog was, so she had genetic testing done on him, and he's a Munsterlander! She had found a rare treat that someone had dumped on the curb.

Timmy the Double-Dapple Dachshund

Surviving Adversity

TimmyTimmy's type of dachshund is a special type: he's a double-dapple! He was "selectively" bred for for his looks, with little regard for his health. Double-dapples are usually a result of deliberate in-breeding. As a result of this, Timmy has a neurological disorder that causes him to have seizures and affects his sight. Timmy was rescued by Heart United for Animals in Nebraska from a puppy mill and waiting for a loving home to help through his difficult medical problems. Despite all this, Timmy has a sunny disposition and is a friendly dog.

Chopper the German Shepherd

Escape Artist

Chopper is a special guy because he is my sister's dog, and she got him from a rescue in Kentucky. She drove hours to bring the boy to his forever home. Chopper was found foraging in dumpsters, and had an infection behind his ears common in dogs that forage because they stick their heads in the trash. We don't know why his left ear is at an angle; we suspect abuse from a previous owner. Did Chopper escape a bad life? Was he a guard dog? What did he look like as a puppy? What's his birthday? These are all questions that people wonder about their rescues, but they love them just the same.

Recently, Chopper went to the Rainbow Bridge due to a widespread illness that was incurable. We greatly miss this boy and our time with him was way too short.

Boston Terrier Girl

Slowly Coming Around

This gal has quite a sad story. She was rescued from a puppy mill. She has scars on her back and her ears are all chewed up from fights with other dogs. She is also a little timid around humans. Her owner said that when she got her the poor dog would stay in the corner like a statue because of how she was treated before. Her owner also remarked that her curiosity of me and my camera is a sign of marked improvement with her temperament. This Boston Terrier is slowly realizing what it means be around people who love and care for her..

Lovely tribute to these precious rescued dogs. I thought your intro with it's definition of what makes a puppy mill was great- folks can know what to avoid and look out for. Loved the way you focused on the positives in these situations. Thanks for the hard work you do for animal rights. Angel Blessed and featured on Blessed Pets.
