Training your Puppy the right way

I love Dogs and Dogs love me.
At least my dogs love me. I have 3 of them and none of them are "problem" dogs. By problem dogs I mean dogs that bark, jump up on visitors, chew the arm off the brand new sofa or miss the toilet.

Each of my dogs is well mannered and knows their boundaries. That is not to say that they are boring dogs. Quite the opposite, they are full of life and energy and are excited every time I see them.

I am able to walk them without a leash (in most places where it is allowed) and I don't have to worry about my dogs running away or annoying another member of the public.

My Dogs don't jump up on people when I have visitors over to my house, they know where to go to the toilet and they are gentle with young children around. They don't bark excessively. The only time they might bark is to tell me about something unusual that is going on in my backyard.

I would hate to have a dog, 1 dog, let alone 3 dogs that were out of control "problem" dogs. Always having to have them on a short leash, telling them to heal, stop barking or get down off your friends.

There is a way to avoid having a "problem" dog if you implement a few easy dog training strategies from the day you bring your puppy home.

The Key to an Obedient Dog

Start training your puppy from day one

The best way to confuse a puppy is to send him mixed messages. if you bring home a new puppy you need to set some ground rules even before you get it home ans stick to them. this will ensure your puppy both respects you and does what he is told.

If you have ever brought a new puppy home you will know the joy and excitement it can bring to a home.

You might also know that after the novelty of having a new puppy wares off, sometimes it can be tough to handle a puppy. They can be full of energy usually even after you have run out of energy yourself.

Sometimes it can all get too much trying to control an unruly puppy who won't listen to anything you say.

Know what your doing

It helps to know what you're doing. To know why your puppy isn't obeying your commands. Most of the time it is because you have already done a lot of damage in the first couple of weeks since bringing your new puppy home.

Yes it's hard to chastise a cute little puppy. So you let him get away with a few things. Chewing on your old socks, jumping up on the sofa or biting you when you play with him. But these are bad habits that you are teaching a new puppy are alright to do. For you to then turn around a month later and try to teach it some manners will prove to be very hard work.

Getting in there and doing it right from the start can save you time, money and your sanity.

Tried and Tested Training Methods

Take some advice from a professional.

Here's a Tip

Somebody has been through all of this before. They have trained dog after dog and they know what work and what doesn't on a whole.

It can be frustrating trying to break your puppy's bad habits when he grows up a little and becomes a bit more destructive.

The trick is to set your rules and put some tried and tested training methods in place from the first moment you get your little puppy home. You will find that your dog will respect you a lot more and you will have very few issues with controlling his behaviour.

Implemented in the right way none of these training methods will take away from your dog's personality.

In fact you will find that as your puppy grows into a dog and your best friend, for your dog to know his boundaries are fundamental to having a great relationship with your dog.

Nobody wants a dog that they are yelling and screaming at all the time. And no dog wants an owner who yells. Especially if the dog does not know he is doing something wrong.

Don't teach your dog bad manners and he wont develop any.

Dont' Confuse Your Puppy

Teach your puppy good habits

It is very confusing for a puppy to be allowed to get away with murder in the first few weeks and months. Then, all of a sudden, the things that were ok before, even encouraged are now things that he is scolded for. There is a lot more work in trying to un-teach than teach properly from the beginning.

If you allow your puppy to jump up on the sofa for the first 3 weeks you have him home how will he know not to do it when he gets bigger?

The best plan is to give your puppy some sort of formal training from a very early age. Sometimes people wait a few weeks or even a few months then they enrol their puppy in puppy school because they have lost the ability to control him or they think the puppy is now "ready" for training because they have reached 2 months old. The truth is that they will never need puppy school if they are taught well from the beginning.
It is never too late but you give yourself a bigger challenge if you wait this long.

Puppy School

Your puppy should never need to go to puppy school

Puppy school can be expensive and time consuming. So get your hands on some documentation from the professionals and start training your puppy from the beginning. I'm sure you will have great times with your puppy for many years as you watch him grow from a puppy into your best friend.

You can complicate things further for yourself if you try to so it on your own. There are some great professional resources that step you through every stage of your puppy's development. This is one of the best and most comprehensive I have found. Save yourself a lot of time and frustration obedience course
