Purple Cake Day - March 1st

Purple Cake Day

Purple Cake Day is a celebration that arose out of a tragedy.

It takes place on March 1st.

The first celebration took place in 2011.

This year 2012 - will be the second celebration.

The day was founded by a young Kiwi widow - Emily Sanson-Rejouis - in honour of her 3 year old daughter Zenzie who wanted to have 2 purple cakes for her upcoming 4th birthday. But Zenzie never got to celebrate her 4th birthday.

Zenzie died in Haiti on January 12, 2010 along with her father Emmanuel and her sister Kofie-Jade (aged 5).

Emily Sanson Rejois and Family before the Haiti Earthquake

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by an earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale. Over 200,000 people died in that quake. It has left behind one of the most devastated countries on eath.

Emmanual Rejouis (aged 39) was in his hotel room looking after his 3 young daughters when the earthquake hit. The 5 storey hotel collapsed. Emmanual and 2 of his daughters died. The baby survived.

Emmanual's New Zealand born wife Emily Sanson was at her job. She worked for the United Nations. The UN building was destroyed. (see image below)

And on Wikipedia there is a list of casualties. But nowhere on that list is there any mention of casualties from New Zealand. All 3 of Emily Sanson Rejois' daughters were born in New Zealand. So therefore it should be known that two New Zealand citizens died in that earthquake.

What a heartfelt story. Congratulation on making the top lenses for March Celebrations. This one certainly isn't silly, though. Blessed.
