Key To Being Remarkable

What is Purple Cow all about?

Purple Cow written by Seth Godin is an iconoclastic book on marketing and related domain. The book was first published in 2003. However, it is still relevant as there are only a handful, but increasingly growing, companies and individuals that have taken the message to heart. The message is simple: You can transform your business, your company, and yourself by being remarkable. Be innovative. Be remarkable.

From the book

Remarkable marketing is the art of building things worth noticing right into your product or service. Not slapping on marketing as a last-minute add-on, but understanding that if your offering itself isn't remarkable, it's invisible.

Purple Cow - Central Theme

Like the Buddhist 8-fold path, I present to you the Purple 8-fold path:

1) Marketing has long pursued mass audience.
2) Mass-marketing is no longer working. It is wasteful and ineffective.
3) Time to stand out.
4) The way to standout is by being remarkable to a small audience of those people who seek innovations.
5) The way to be remarkable is to destroy the notion that marketing is a post-production process
6) Marketing needs to begin at the product design stage.
7) If a product is designed to be remarkable, the product will sell on its own.
8) The path to the remarkable lies in pushing existing boundaries and going beyond.

The book is filled with examples of companies that have succeeded by following the above 8-fold path. Success in Business and Success in Life is assure if the modern-age 8-fold path that I have delineated above is followed. It can be done and it has been done.

Purple cow has plenty of take-aways. Fortunately, the author does not fall into the trap of overdoing the take-away bit.

From the book

The lesson is simple- boring always leads to failure. (Except, of course, when being boring is, in and of itself, remarkable). Boring is always the most risky strategy. Smart business-people realize this, and they work to minimize (but not eliminate) the risk from the process.

Purple Cow - Ratings and Recommendation

Style: Reads like a blog. Oh Wait! The contents are from a blog. As all blogs go, the content is crisp and to the point.

Knowledge content: Good. Many examples to emulate (or not! as that would be defeating the point)

Applicability: Immediate and very effective.

Recommendation: What? Haven't you read Purple Cow yet?

From the book

In almost every market, the boring slot is filled. The product designed to appeal to the largest possible audience already exists, and displacing it is awfully difficult. ... The real growth comes with products that annoy, offend, don't appeal, are too expensive, too cheap, too heavy, too complicated, too simple - too something.

Let's have a debate

Do you think being remarkable is overrated?

Loading

Yes. There seems to be a trend to go over the top in an attempt to be remarkable.

John_Michael says:

for sure - too much hype and often no substance

No. In this extremely competitive world, you need to stand out for success.

Have you read the book? What do you say?
