Its a Thrill to Be Honered by Your Peers

I write this the day before the SAG Awards. Actors say that this is the most important to them, because it is their peers to vote to decide who will be best actor in all the categories. The people who know the most about the work choose them.

Recently, Squidoo set up a system whereby someone who gets Purple Star gets to pass it forward by nominating another lens to get the award. Thus, now when we get these stars, we know that it was picked by another talented lensmaster and it means so much more. Its great to be able to nominate someone else (although a hard decision) but such an honor when one of these people chooses your lens.

It is because of this that I decided to open this lens about my purple stars. It means that much to me.

Honoring My Parents and Getting A Lens of The Day

My very first lens was an act of love. I wrote it about my parents and the newspapers that they ran for the first years of my life. It became a Lens of the Day. What a wonderful surprise and pleasure.

This lens tells the story of the risk my parents took to follow their dreams and start a business. It is a history of small business, the newspaper business and life in the Midwest in the mid 20th century.

It was in the top 100 for many weeks and even made it to the top 10 of all lenses. It was #1 in the business category. I am very proud of this lens as well as the people about whom I wrote. It never got a purple star, but even if it hadn't been LOTD, it will always bee #1 in my heart.

Have You Read This Lens?

Mom was gone when I wrote it, but I used to read Dad the comments and he was so tickled. I know that somehow Mom got pleasure from it also.

I really love how you presented this one, it really made me think about things in my own life that seemed, well, almost like 'miracles.' You kept it so very realistic too, not 'way out there.' That is truly a sign of a very skilled writer.

  • sousababy Jan 30, 2011 @ 12:12 am | delete
Oh, I must check these out. And hey, if you've been to Nova Scotia you must have heard Great Big Sea? (I just did a lens about them). Some of the nicest people on earth (my belief) come from Canada's east coast. (Course, I haven't traveled much though).

I told Shelly about your experience with her teeth and she got Mom to her dentist over Christmas.
