Purple Is Such A Regal Colour

Why Is Purple Considered To Be A Symbol Of Royalty?

Purple, the colour of Kings, emperors and Royalty; why does it have these associations? The answer lies in the past, a dye was extracted from a marine sea-snail which was originally called Tyrian Purple. It was very expensive and was only available to those of great wealth. It also became associated with the leaders and government of ancient Rome, the badge of office of senators was a purple stripe on their white togas.

So, it is easy to see why purple was chosen as the colour of the star to represent the best lenses on Squidoo. As Bonnie and Robin say on their lens about the purple star program, "Purple Stars are fairy dust. They're magic. They're surprises. They're trophies celebrating authentic, original, fantastic content on Squidoo." It is considered quite seemly to brag about one's purple stars so I am going to start to keep a list of mine on this page. I have recently been awarded membership of the Giant Squid club for 50 great lenses and hope to be getting more as I increase my portfolio. Of course you will have to return to find out if I achieve this goal.

Deep Purple That Is

As someone whose formative years were in the sixties, I have a deep-seated liking of progressive rock. DEEP PURPLE were one of my favourite groups. Try this number if you don't know much about them, but it is worth listening to the whole thing, as it gets better and better as it proceeds.

All Artists Are Familiar With Purple

A mixture Of Red And Blue

It is easy to mix a purple, any artist will tell you that it is a question of mixing the primary colours red and blue. But like any secondary colour, there are many different hues which can be obtained depending upon the ratio of these colours. And, the resulting purple will not be a clean, bright colour if the wrong primaries are used. All commercially available primary colours are mixtures of more than one hue. I give simple rules in my lens The Use Of The Colour Wheel, and how the use of various commercial colours can affect the secondary mixture in my lens Painting The Seasons in Watercolour.
This is the information that artists need to have in order to create bright and well thought-out artworks.

Of course yellow is the complementary of purple and is used to create contrast or to darken the purple colour.

There are specific names for many purple hues but violet is a spectral colour with wavelength shorter than that of blue, so is a separate colour to purple. They are often confused however.

My Purple Star Lenses

Although I have only eight of these awards so far I am hoping for many more. I will add more as they become a reality.

I think they are a worthwhile reward

greenspirit says:

I'm always so critical of my lenses that I am amazed when I get a purple. I invariably think I haven't deserved it and rush to try and make the lens worthy. So for me they make me work harder.

Nah, they don't mean a thing

A Little More Information On The Colour Purple

What Does It Mean To Us?

There is a dichotomy about purple, being a mixture of the hottest ( red) and the coolest ( blue) hues. This causes a tension in the mind of the observer which causes some interesting physical and/or psychological effects. The historical meaning of the colour also affects the way we see it. We have seen one of these effects above in the introduction. Because of the expense of the dye in classical historic settings, it was only available to those with money. Thus it was associated with royalty.

Purple has a number of resulting effects on the human pysche:-

It is considered uplifting
It calms the mind and settles the nerves
It offers a sense of spirituality
It encourages Creativity

I don't like wearing purple, or purple things in the house, but I LOVE purple flowers. I've never got the hang of bragging about purple stars...so I haven't..it still seems a bit rude, but I am trying to change my ways.
Thank you for blessing my Snowdrop lens...that was so kind, and very much appreciated.
