Purple People Eater

Ranked #7,417 in Music, #198,427 overall

Purple People Eater is:

➀  a novelty song by Sheb Wooley;

➁  an orginal image by Kate Phizackerley;

➂  a popular Squidoo lens template.

This lens is intended to showcase the Squidoo Purple Eater template by using it to introduce the song by Sheb Wooley and showcase my artwork. Ambitious or what? But I've rarely had such fun putting a lens together.

Purple People Eater - Novelty Song

One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater

Sheb Wooley Original

You could watch a video of the 1958 original with Sheb Wolley but the version I have featured has a much cleaner soundtrack so I think this is the one to go for.

Chipmunks Cover

A catchy somg about a one eye one horned flying purple people eater monster which lands on earth wanting to become part of a rock band was always going to attract some unique cover versions and one of the catchiest of all is from cartoon series featuring Alvin & the Chipmunks. Here is is in the context of the original cartoon.

And if that was too short and you want the extended version - and you'll surprise yourself, believe me - then here's a version which is more than 3½ minutes long! It even has a great sax solo!"

Purple People Eater Rock Band

And given the Purple People Eater's ambition to play in a rock band, there also has to be a rocked up version as well. Here's one from from Nickleodeon in 2007.

Do You Share my Enthusiasm?

I think this song is just great fun. The words are a nonsense but they still stick in your head, and the music is infectious.

Fun or what?

your right the words are catchy! Thanks for the laughs.

Yawn, not for me!

Spook says:

Actually I only chose this because I am not really able to follow things that I cannot remember. It's a long story.

Purple People Eater - Artwork

Purple People EaterPurple People Eater

For my artwork I didn't take inspiration from the monsters of legend nor from dungeons and dragons. Instead I chose a real high-tech monster - a Cray 3. That was one of the first supercomputers. Massively stylish it was cylindrical in shape with a seat round the bottom and orange backrests. A simply gorgeous piece of technology in both form and function - but a true monster in terns of it's computing power (for it's day, of course). So my Purple People Eater is a tribute to the Cray - with the organge backrests of course!

Purple People Eater - Squidoo Template

Over my time on Squidoo I have learned not to follow a template too closely. It's tempting to look in the style sheet and work out the precise colors used, or the font sizes specified. Joshua Brown and the rest of the Squidoo time evolve the stylesheets overtime and following them slavishly tends to cause massive work when a new version of a stylesheet is updated. I therefore now prefer to go with the feel of a template which is why I have put this lens together as a showcase of the Squidoo Purple People Eater template.

It's a much more restrained template than you may imagine. There are blocks of purple at the top and foot of the lens, but in-between it's not too vibrant. Headings are in purple, but it's quite a mooted hue and blends well with grey or black text. It's a template I like for moderate funkiness, or initial impact in the Introduction where the purple header block is very visible.

The one major difficulty is shown by this lens: Blackbox modules are hard to use as there is no purple option. I opted for green but for some lenses vibrant red may be an option. I could code my own alternative in HTML/CSS but I like Blackbox modules as they index into the Table of Contents automatically. I could, of course, hand code that as well but for all but the most special of my lenses I have learned to think about maintaining a lens over the long term with the minimum effort. Hand-codes HTML and CCS is great but it will need to be adjusted every now and again if the template changes, or if I make substantial changes to the content of the lens.

I am a little nervous about this lens. I have never been so ambitious about covering such a diverse range of goals in a single lens. I hope it has worked. I would appreciate your feedback and for a rating for the lens.
