A Look into the Classes Offered by Film and Video Schools

So now that you've finally decided to forge ahead in your career in film by enrolling in a film video school, what's next for you? While all film & video schools will have different focuses, different teachers and different teaching styles, almost all respectable institutions will always have the same class-albeit under a different name sometimes-as part of their curriculum, simply because it needs to be taught to students for them to be successful in the film industry. Most of these classes tackle the fundamentals of the industry, which means that at some point, every film student is bound encounter them.

Here are two classes that you will surely have to go through.

Storytelling Basics

This is a class that goes by many names in different film & video schools, and is often taught before students even pick up a camera. It's easily recognizable for its subject matter, which is the composition of stories and how storytelling works-the class will cover how stories are designed, what makes them tick, what makes an effective story and how to best craft stories for an audience. This makes it quite alike to a writing or literature class, except that this time around, the fundamentals of storytelling are taught through the perspective of film and visual media.

History of Film

Considered by many to be one of the dullest classes offered by film & video schools, history of film classes are usually made up of endless hours spent watching old and classic films. From the old silent films from the turn of the century to cult classics that are meaningless to most viewers. History of film helps the student to better understand the art form and appreciate how films have come so far in the last 100 years or so.

Needless to say, these are just two of the many classes offered by film & video schools. Other examples include screenwriting, sound engineering, directing 101, video editing and a whole lot more.
