Quotes from The Pursuit of Happyness

Do you have a favorite quote from The Pursuit of Happyness? Mine is one that I don't hear quoted often. The scene occurs as Chris and wife Linda are getting washed one morning. Chris says he stopped at Dean Witter about a job.

"What job?" Linda asks.

Chris makes a comment about how he was always good at math and so he thought he'd stop at Dean Witter about a job.

"What job?" Linda repeats exasperated.

"A stock broker," Chris says.

"A stock broker? What, not an astronaut?"

This line cracks me up, because it is such a wonderful example of how often people close to us may think that our dreams are a bit absurd, certainly beyond our reach. And how it takes a certain kind of courage, which Chris Gardner had, to push on in light of such comments.

I guess this quote comes outside the movie but..

I first heard it watching The Pursuit of Happyness

Christopher Gardner: Hey dad, you wanna hear something funny? There was a man who was drowning, and a boat came, and the man on the boat said "Do you need help?" and the man said "No thanks, God will save me". Then another boat came and he tried to help him, but he said "No thanks, God will save me", then he drowned and went to Heaven. Then the man told God, "God, why didn't you save me?" and God said "I sent you two big boats, you dummy!"

Pursuit of Happiness Quote from Declaration of Independence

In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner says:

"It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what.

How did he know that?"

Sometimes simple words provide the best motivation

A very short quote from Pursuit of Happyness

Christopher Gardner to Chris Gardner: You're a good papa.

This quote is an example of how you don't need to be eloquent, just have a heartfelt message to have a big impact on someone else. Chris Gardner says that his son said this too him once when he was at a very low point and wondering whether he was going to just crack up from the stress and when he heard his son say, "You're a good papa" he knew instantly that he could and would carry on.

I challenge you today to think of words you can say to someone close to you that will motivate them.
