Alexander Pushkin

Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was a great Russian poet, novelist and playwright of the Romantic period. Many consider him to have been Russia's greatest poet.

His greatest works included the drama, Boris Godunov (1825) and the novel in verse, Eugene Onegin (1825-32). He wrote many wonderful short stories such as "The Queen of Spades" and "The Captain's Daughter".

When he was just 37 years of ago, Pushkin was fatally wounded in a duel, an immense loss for Russian literature.

Alexander Pushkin had a great influence on the work of later Russian literary greats such as Gogol, Turgenev, Goncharov and Tolstoy. A number of his works have inspired Russian music, especially opera (for example, Tschaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov).

Pushkin was also a champion of social reform, which caused him many problems with the authorities during his lifetime.

Pushkin's incomparable poem has at its center a young Russian dandy much like Pushkin in his attitudes and habits. Eugene Onegin, bored with the triviality of everyday life, takes a trip to the countryside, where he encounters the young and passionate Tatyana. She falls in love with him but is cruelly rejected. Years later, Eugene Onegin sees the error of his ways, but fate is not on his side. A tragic story about love, innocence, and friendship, this beautifully written tale is a treasure for any fan of Russian literature.

Three, seven, ace, will win for you...

"I have come to you against my wish," she said in a firm voice: "but I have been ordered to grant your request. Three, seven, ace, will win for you if played in succession, but only on these conditions: that you do not play more than one card in twenty-four hours, and that you never play again during the rest of your life. I forgive you my death, on condition that you marry my companion, Lizaveta Ivanovna."

-- Alexander Pushkin, The Queen of Spades (1890)

I am deeply enthusiastic about Pushkin (I did my dissertation for my Russian Studies degree on his Southern Poems), so I was delighted to see this excellent lens. I also love Prokofiev, and Boris Godunov is my favourite opera, so you made my day. Blessings here.
