Start Putting Like a Pro
We have all struggled with our putting game, some more than others. If you think about it, putting comprises about 40 - 50% of your total score. So to improve on putting, would be to improve overall pretty quickly and sometimes dramatically. Imagine if you could change all of your three putts into two putts. I've picked up a few tips along the way on improving my putting that I will share with you, please share your tips too!
My Favorite Putting Tips to Help your Game almost Immediately
Putting Tips in no particular order.1.) Develop a Routine It doesn't matter what your routine is for putting, just have one. Get ready for the putt the same way each time, for example, you can look at the putt from behind the ball first, then look at the putt from halfway to the hole, then look at the putt from behind the hole. Then make your way back to the ball and look at the putt one more time from behind the ball. Then you can make practice swings, get in your stance, and putt. Or you may have your own unique way of preparing for a putt, take a drink first, or whatever :). Just develop a routine and stick with it. It will help you stay focused on the putt each and every time.
2.) Go ahead and putt already. Some people will linger over a putt too long, causing them to lose focus, not to mention lose their putting line. After you've done your routine, go ahead and just putt. From the time you take your last practice swing and get into your stance, it shouldn't take more than 10 seconds to putt the ball. If you are taking longer, practice putting sooner for a while till you get used to it.
3.) Loosen up your grip. Are your hands so tight on the grip that your fingers are turning red. Putting requires finesse, and a tight grip will put your hands too much into the putt. You want the putter to do the work. So loosen up your grip. Tiger talks about taking putting lessons from Ben Crenshaw early in Tiger's career. Ben told him that he was gripping way too tight, which is why his putts would often veer away from the hole, his hands were adding motion to the putt. Crenshaw lets the putter sit very loosely in his hands, and he simply guides the putter towards the ball. Tiger says that now his grip is about a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. It should probably be about a 3 or 4 for best results.
4.) Stop using your lower body. If your lower body is moving at all while you putt, stop it. You don't need the strength from you lower body for a putt, unless it's a doozy. The lower body will only add the wrong type of motion to your putt. On the practice green, focus on keeping your lower body still. Keep practicing until it feels natural.
There are other Putting Tips to help your game, but focus on these things first, and you should see some improvements in your game, almost immediately.

After watching Tim Clark in the President's cup sink putt after putt, you think you may want to give a 2 ball putter a try. The 2 ball putters are great for alignment, especially for the short putts. You can look down over the ball, and see it line up with the 2 balls on the backside of the putter face. There's no way to have your putt misaligned. But is it goof for all situations? One of the things that I had a problem with is that the putter is heavier, and it is hard to judge distance with it. For short putts it works great, but for longer putts, it takes a lot of time to get a feel for the putt.
As you could tell from Tim Clark, you can have a lot of success with this putter, but you need to invest the time in getting used to it. At first, you will likely miss terribly on the longer putts. But stick with it, and you should see great results.
