What are pysanky?
A pysanka (plural: pysanky) is an egg decorated in the Ukrainian style using a wax-resist method. Many other cultures in Eastern Europe decorate similar eggs. The famous Russian Fabrege eggs are derivative of this custom.
A stylus called a kystka is used to draw designs on the egg with melted beeswax. Then, each egg is dipped into a succession of dyes to achieve the desired result. Once the egg has been dyed, the egg is heated in a candle and rubbed to remove the hardened beeswax. The egg is finally polished and displayed; they are not intended to be eaten. Some artists blow out the whites and yolks from the eggs before displaying them; others leave the egg intact and let the insides dry out naturally.

Pysanky @ Wikipedia
A pysanka (, plural: pysanky) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax.

Pisanica (pl. pisanice) is a decorated Croatian Easter egg that comes from an old Slavic custom dating back to pagan times. During Easter, eggs would be painted with bright colors, and would be given as gifts, especially to young children or a significant other. Before paint became common, villagers would have to use whatever resources they had available around them to make the dyes and p...

- During Easter meal we pick the favorite egg from the basket, and start the 'Egg Wars'. You hit the egg of the opponent trying to break the shell. The winner eats all the eggs.
Welcome to the group about 'Poland'.
Oh, the eggs are boiled before 'the War', of course.

- Do you know that I ALMOST made a lens on pysanky as my Ukrainian/Rusyn grandmother made the most beautiful eggs -- they were incredible works of art! When I last visited my mother, we went to an Ukrainian church which had many pysanky on display -- I offered to buy one, but they wouldn't sell any -- now I've subscribed to a site that sells these! Welcome to the Everything Eastern European group -- pleased to have you.
