How to Mend Your Quadriceps Tendonitis
Ranked #1,379 in Healthy Living, #27,134 overall
The Quadriceps tendon is a cord-like tendon that is located just above the Patella (or kneecap), and connects the Quadriceps muscle group to the Patella. This tendon allows for superior movement by working with the patellar tendon and Quadriceps muscles to straighten the knee and leg.
Causes
What Causes Quadriceps Tendonitis?
Quadriceps tendonitis may occur due to an acute trauma of some sort, and is also most common among athletes participating in sports that involve jumping (basketball). Quadriceps tendonitis is also an overuse injury, meaning that the tendon can become weak because of repetitive movements. Inappropriate footwear or improper training techniques are common causes of this injury as well. Individuals with poor biomechanics (leg misalignment, flat foot or leg length discrepancies) may experience uneven weight bearing on their Quadriceps tendon which could also result in Quadriceps tendonitis. Symptoms
What Symptoms Should You Expect?
If you have Quadriceps tendonitis you will experience a great deal of pain when straightening your leg and may also notice some swelling, bruising or tenderness just above your kneecap. Symptoms you may experience if you have a complete tendon tear include difficulty walking (your knee may buckle when you place any weight onto it), an indentation at the top of your knee, or your kneecap may feel loose or sag. Treatments
What Treatments are Available to Mend Your Quadriceps Tendonitis?
Cold Compression Therapy - The R.I.C.E. Method
Cold Compression Therapy is ideal for treatment within the first 48 to 72 hours after a Quadriceps tendonitis injury or after any sort of activity that has aggravated the injury.
Begin R.I.C.E. treatments by resting your leg as much as possible and restrict any movement to prevent further damage. Ice the swollen area at least 3 times a day for approximately 20 minutes (allow for 45 minute periods between treatments). Do not apply ice directly onto your Quadriceps tendon as this may cause cryoburn (freezer burn to the skin) - use a piece of cloth, towel or compression wrap to protect the injured tendon. Compress the area if possible by adding light pressure to minimize swelling. Finally, elevate your leg to relieve swelling and allow fluid to properly drain.

Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy
If you are still experiencing some inflammation in your Quadriceps tendon, and the area is no longer swollen you may want to explore the healing benefits of Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy (BFST). BFST decreases inflammation and increases blood circulation. Blood is the transport mechanism for oxygen, nutrients, water and antibodies, thus proper blood flow is essential when healing any tendon injury. BFST is provided through the use of heat therapy which can be found in heating wrap products.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound is a method of stimulating tissue beneath the skin's surface using sound waves. It is like a high frequency massage that can penetrate up to 4" below the surface of the skin. The heating and massaging effects of therapeutic ultrasound have 3 primary benefits: it can speed the healing process, reduce swelling, and heal damaged tissue softening scar tissue. Essentially, the nutrient absorption rate and blood flow within the injured ankle area will be greatly enhanced through the use of an ultrasound device. Portable ultrasound therapy is recommended and administered by many doctors and physical therapists.
When applied directly to the skin, the transducer head of an ultrasound unit cannot effectively transfer sound waves into the body. A conductive medium (ultrasound gel) is required to facilitate therapeutic ultrasound.
Ultrasound can also be used to administer therapeutic medicines into the body which provides the added benefit of delivering soothing medicated gel to the site of the pain. This is a process known as Phonophoresis.

- Hi, I'ma 22 year old male and I play Div.1 University football and also practice with the university basketball team. About 2 months ago I started experienceing noticeable pain above my left knee cap on the medial inside of my knee. I had been doing lots of leg workouts as well as plyometrics and football practices all year and never felt anything wrong. I went to a physiotherapist where electro stimulation was used about 3-4 times a week for 3 weeks but it did not have much of an effect on reducing the pain in my knee.
After 2-3 weeks of leg rest (zero lower body workouts) i went to a different therapist where ultrasound therapy was added to electro stimulation. I find it very difficult to run at any speed without pain, squatting and climbing stairs provide sharp pain throughout the upper inside portion of my left knee, and i feel it is very weak and feels almost unstable when I walk.
Is there some other technique I should be looking into? Does this sound like tendonitis? I want to get back on the field as quick as possible before the season starts with 100 percent knee health, Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Frustrated runningback

- Hi Keegan,
It is Paul from Mendmeshop following up.
Prior to implementing any more treatments, I would first work to obtain a proper diagnosis. Until that is accomplished, you may go through numerous courses of treatments which may have no effect on the situation since the extent of the damage and the actual injury is still unknown at this time.
Since football certainly makes up a very important part of your life, obtaining a proper diagnosis is imperative at this stage. I would follow up with your doctor and they will make the appropriate referral for you.

- Hello, I'm a 21 year old male. About a week ago, I took a hard fall on my left knee. After that I experienced a momentary burning hot striking pain just above my knee. I can walk and still put weight on my leg, but the area just above my knee hurts a lot at some angles. Any suggestions?

- Hi Jake,
Thanks for your posting.
First and foremost, it would be advisable to rule out any potential stress fracture to the knee cap. You had mentioned the fall you suffered would be considered moderate to more severe, so this would be a first step.
Second, you will want to determine what damage has been suffered to the tendons and ligaments in the knee as this could affect mobility and stability going forward.
Once more information is obtained about the extent of the injury, we could then look at options to help heal and reverse the damage that has occurred.

- Hello, I am an 18 year old who used to play competitive level soccer. Almost one and a half year ago i started to experience pain right above both my knee caps. I went for physiotherapy (Ultrasound, laser, IFC treatments) and it had no affect/relief whatsoever. I rested for more than 2 months and stilll no sign of it getting any better. I even payed alot of money to visit a doctor in the states for 2 weeks. He stated that my quad muscles were weak which generates pain in the knee... After i got back from the states, the pain is less but it still exists right above my knees. When i apply pressure (squats) or walk up stairs i experience the most pain. It is a sharp pain. I think this may be quadricep tendonitis but do you think this is a tear? I've suffered from this for almost 2 years and I haven't been able to do anything active (Sports, exercising, etc). This doctor also reccommended that i do these "ISO" exercises which i have been doing for almost a month now, which definitely strengthened my quad and hamstrings and the pain is still there... Do you think surgery is the only method at this point? Please let me know asap! Thank you.

- Hello Jacob,
It certainly sounds like you have an ongoing issue within your knee.
Have you had an MRI to determine what the exact injury may be? It is hard to tell if it is a tear, chondromalacia patella, bursitis, sprain etc. without a proper diagnosis.
Surgery may be an option depending on what the injury is. Sometimes you can avoid surgery by using alternative therapies such as blood flow stimulation and ultrasound.
I am sorry i was not more assistance to you. Once you know what the diagnosis may be we could certainly help with treatments.
Best regards,
Danieca

- Hello, I am a 16 year old female. I run track (sprints) and last year experienced pain above my kneecap on my right leg. My knee felt really stiff and only hurt after practice. Then, it started hurting all day long. It really hurt to walk down the stairs and I started putting most of my weight on my left leg. In March, I was told I had knee tendonitis. I took 4-6 weeks off and my knee started feeling better. However, now whenever I jump, walk long distances, or run around for a while, my knee starts to hurt again.
I was wondering if I should run track again this year, or just stop running altogether. Also, I was wondering if I can do anything to get better and how to keep it from coming back. I have been resting and icing it.

- Hi There,
Thank you for your detailed post. It is good that you took time off to let your knee heal. As far as whether you should continue to run track? Well that really depends on how much your knee tendonitis has healed, as you do not want to keep injuring the tissues.
Tendons are basically hard fibrous connective tissue that connect muscle to bone. Tendonitis is inflammation and or irritation in the tendon caused by micro tearing. The most common reason you develop tendonitis is by overuse.
The body's natural way to heal an injury is to put scar tissue over the micro tears in the injured area. Unfortunately, scar tissue is not as flexible as normal healthy tissue; so when you do too much activity with the knee, you are potentially re tearing all of those small tears within the tendon.
That's where our Portable Ultrasound Therapy System comes in. Ultrasound Therapy is a painless, proven, easy way to soften and break up any scar tissue in your tendons, which is probably causing most of your discomfort. The sound waves that are emitted massage the tendon causing the scar tissue to soften and the tendon to become healthier. In addition, it is going to help heal any micro tearing in the tendon. The ultrasound does this by improving blood flow to your tissues, which promotes healing and also reduces swelling and inflammation, which is the main source of pain. Ultrasound therapy is not recommended for individuals under the age of 16, so I would definitely suggest that you see your doctor before considering this method of treatment.
You can also treat your knee with some Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy (through use of an Inferno Wrap) to help get rid of toxins and cellular waste within the injured tissue by promoting blood flow to the site of the injury. Treatment with our Inferno Wrap will encourage the flow of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood (something your body needs to heal) directly to your damaged tissue. The Inferno Wrap will also stimulate the production of collagen, which is a building block for healthy tissue. The Inferno Wrap is also a great maintenance tool to use after the knee tendonitis is healed. If you use this wrap before running track or other exercise, it will warm up the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the knee reducing the risk of re injury.

- Hi Shoeb,
This is Danieca from MendMeShop.
You definitely did the right thing by going to the doctor and getting an MRI. It is always important to get the doctors diagnosis for proper treatments.
Quadriceps Tendonitis affects the patellar tendon just above the kneecap area. This condition is the painful degeneration of the inside of the quadriceps tendon above the kneecap. A person experiencing quadriceps tendonitis will have particular pain straightening the lower leg, or decelerating when walking. The major point of pain originates from above the kneecap.
Cold compression therapy via our Freezie Wrap will help reduce your swelling and inflammation as well as help with the pain. Our Freezie Wrap is specially designed, with a gel pack that is cooled in the fridge instead of the freezer - which means that you won’t have to place a frozen, rigid ice pack against your tender quadriceps injury. Since you are still experiencing some slight swelling you should use cold therapy with our Freezie Wrap for 20 minutes up to 4 times a day. This will help to get rid of the remainder of your swelling, which will allow you to treat the underlying inflammation that is present in your quadriceps tendon.
Ultrasound Therapy is a great tool to use for treating tendonitis and healing a tendon tear. Therapeutic Ultrasound works on a cellular level creating friction between your cells giving you three primary benefits:
1. Blood flow is increased within the injured tissue, which speeds your body's natural healing process.
2. Swelling and edema (some of the main sources of pain) are reduced.
3. Ultrasound therapy softens existing scar tissue and minimizes the build up of new scar tissue. This helps to reduce your pain while healing, and gives you greater flexibility once your injury has healed.
Our Lavender Infusion Ultrasound Gel is another therapy on its own. It contains eucalyptus, peppermint, Bulgarian lavender, and menthol. These are all-natural botanicals that offer anti-inflammatory, pain relief, and muscle relaxant properties. Using the Lavender Infusion Gel with our Portable Ultrasound will strengthen your overall therapy.
Once the swelling and inflammation have subsided with Cold Compression and Ultrasound Therapy, our Inferno Wrap is a great tool to stimulate your blood flow during healing and maintain good health in your quadriceps tendon once the injury has healed. The Inferno Wrap essentially provides much needed BFST (Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy) that promotes deep tissue healing. During treatment you will feel a deep warming sensation within the tissues. Once blood flow is restored to the injured tissues, cellular waste and toxins are whisked away as oxygen filled blood soothes your injured tissue, speeding the body's natural healing process. The deep warming sensation will also relax all surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the treatment area decreasing your risk of re-injury.
I hope I have answered all of your questions today... If you would like more information about the therapies I have mentioned, treatment of your quadriceps tendon with our products, or the services we have to offer please do not hesitate to contact us toll free at 1-877-876-4588.
Wishing you the best in health & wellness,
Danieca
