Have You Ever Wondered How The QB Rating Is Calculated?

Passer rating (known as passing efficiency or pass efficiency in NCAA Football) is a measure of the performance of Quarterbacks or any other passers . There are at least two formulas currently in use: one officially used by the NFL , and one used in NCAA. Passer rating is calculated using each quarterback's completion percentage, passing yardage, Touchdowns and Interceptions.

NCAA
Passer rating, known formally in college football as pass efficiency, is based on player performances. The NCAA passing efficiency formula is far simpler than the NFL formula, as it lacks limits on the four components:

Passer Rating (NCAA)
(8.4xyards)+(330xtouchdowns)+(100xcompletions)-(200xinterceptions)/number of attempts

The NCAA passer rating has an upper limit of 1,261.6 (every attempt is a 99-yard completion for touchdown), and a lower limit of -731.6 (every attempt is completed, but results in a 99-yard loss). A passer who throws only interceptions will have a -200 rating, as would a passer who only throws completed passes losing an average of 35 yards.

NFL
The calculation of the NFL quarterback rating involves more steps than the NCAA formula. In order to establish a maximum value for an NFL player's passer rating, a separate calculation needs to be completed involving each of the following four categories: Completion Percentage, Average Yards Per Attempt, Percentage of Touchdown Passes, and Percentage of Interceptions. If the result in any category is less than 0, the given result should be 0. If the result in any category is greater than 2.375, the given result should be 2.375. This makes the maximum possible quarterback rating for the NFL 158.3. A perfect rating requires at least a 77.5% completion rate, at least 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on at least 11.875% of attempts, and no interceptions.

a=((comp/attx100)-30)x.05
b=(yards/att-3)x.25
c=(TD/att)x20
d=2.375-(int/attx25)

Then use the above calculations to complete the passer rating. I hope you now have a better understanding of how some look at the position.

4 QB Factory Clients Make the Maryland Crab Bowl All-Star Game

From the Baltimore Sun 12-19-09

Year of the quarterback in Baltimore

Maryland Crab Bowl will feature 5 of the 7 local QBs with Div. I potential

Including 4 current QB Factory clients; Billy Cosh, Jerry Lovelocke, Josh Bordner and Connor Bruns.
When Maryland Crab Bowl officials set out to finalize the Baltimore roster for Monday's second annual senior all-star football game against Washington, they faced a problem they had never seen before: too many quarterbacks.

They were looking at six potential Division I quarterbacks for three roster spots. Not great for them but certainly great for local fans, who, this fall, saw probably the best collection of high school quarterbacks ever to play in the Baltimore area at the same time.

Those seniors - Arundel's Billy Cosh, Century's Josh Bordner, McDonogh's Rudy Johnson, Loyola's Connor Bruns, Edmondson's Jerry Lovelocke and Poly's Antoine Goodson - along with Gilman junior Darius Jennings bring the number of quarterbacks with Division I potential to seven.

It's College Bowl Season

Congratulations to the Temple Owls and Quarterback Chester Stewart on receiving a bowl bid to the Eaglebank Bowl on December 30th. The Owls will face either UCLA or Army if the Cadets can upset the Navy Midshipmen. Great Job Chester!!

JOSH BORDNER NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR!!!

Congratulations Josh!!

From the Carroll County Times:

Josh Bordner's football career is set to continue at a Division I college thanks to his time spent at quarterback, the position he almost didn't play.

In his youth football days with the Winfield program, Bordner was either a lineman or wide receiver. He envisioned a high school career at linebacker or defensive end.

When he arrived at Century High, Bordner joined a freshman team looking to fill key positions.

"We didn't really have a quarterback, so I just stepped up and did it," he said. "I guess it worked out pretty well."

That's an understatement.

Bordner came to high school with minimal quarterback experience. After two stellar seasons as the Knights' starter, the senior is leaving early and heading to Boston College with a chance to become a big-time college quarterback.

The Times' Football Player of the Year led Century back to the postseason this fall when many football fans had the Knights pegged as a rebuilding team. Bordner helped them overcome an 0-3 start to finish the season 7-4 and reach the Class 2A West playoffs.

He threw for 2,082 yards and 18 touchdowns, and finished his career with 4,433 passing yards, the fourth-most in Carroll history - not bad for a kid who wanted nothing to do with quarterback because he hated the idea of remembering all the plays.

When Century's freshman team needed a quarterback, Bordner raised his hand (he had played some as an eighth-grader). The following season, he made varsity but played mostly defense and wide receiver. Bordner remembers playing quarterback only when things were a bit bleak.

GONZAGA'S KEVIN HOGAN

Interview from Scarletnation.com

While the Class of 2010 is far from over, the search is already on for the next top quarterback in the Class of 2011. One player who has definitely thrown his name into the ring is Kevin Hogan of Washington (DC) Gonzaga, who spoke to ScarletNation.com recently about his junior season, his recruitment, and Rutgers.

Hogan, 6-foot-4 and 200-pounds, is actually also playing safety this season at Gonzaga, but it's his quarterbacking skills that will take him to the next level. Thus far this season he has completed 92 of 140 passes for 1,123 yards and 11 touchdowns through six games.

"The season is going well," said Hogan. "We've played the strength of our schedule and we are currently 3-3. We are hoping to get into the playoffs and surprise some people. We play two struggling teams in the next two weeks and finish up with Good Counsel and St. John's. We have to win three out of those four to reach the playoffs, and I think we can."

When it comes to his recruitment, Hogan is receiving interest from a number of top BCS programs already, and he has already had the opportunity to visit a few of them.

"My team participated in camps at Virginia and Maryland this summer for a passing league, so I have become familiar with some of the coaches there, as well as the campus," said Hogan. "My uncle played at Notre Dame and my sister attends school there now, so I've been out there a few times, but not in a few years."

So how is Hogan's overall recruitment currently progressing?

"Recruitment is going well," said Hogan. "I like all the schools who are interested in me and I like the coaches. Schools that are interested seem to be Virginia, Maryland, Michigan State, Boston College, Notre Dame, Duke, and Wake Forest. Virginia, Boston College, and Notre Dame have visited me at school, and Rutgers was at my game last week."

While Rutgers seems relatively new to the chase, Hogan is eager to learn more.

"Coach Flood from Rutgers was at my game against DeMatha, but that's the only thing I've heard from them," said Hogan. "I don't know much about Rutgers, but I would love to hear from them and check them out."

BALTIMORE SUN'S INTERVIEW WITH JOSH BORDNER

A year ago, quarterback Josh Bordner led Century to the state Class 2A semifinals and the first perfect regular season in Carroll County football in 30 years, passing for 2,217 yards and 18 touchdowns. This season has been a bit different for the senior, who saw most of his teammates graduate. On Friday night, however, Bordner, 17, was in on six touchdowns - three passing, two rushing and one on a blocked punt return - as the Knights earned their first victory of the season, 63-0, over Manchester Valley. Bordner, 6 feet 4, 205 pounds, who has a 3.9 weighted grade-point average, has committed to Boston College. He plans to graduate early and enroll at BC in the spring to take part in spring football.

Question: How did you get started in football?

Answer: My dad got me into football when I was about 4, and I've played ever since. ... When I was about 8 or 9, I was playing with kids about 2 years older than me. I always played up a level, so I was always playing with kids a lot bigger.

Loyola%u2019s Kinnard talks UConn commitment

Loyola junior Leon Kinnard didn't grow up hoping for a chance to play quarterback in college.

But when Connecticut offered him that opportunity last month, Kinnard reevaluated his collegiate goals.

"Well honestly ... I didn't think anyone would give me the opportunity [to play quarterback]," Kinnard said. "But when UConn offered me, I felt great about the opportunity, so I just went ahead and pulled the trigger."

Kinnard, 5 feet 9, committed to UConn last Thursday over Maryland, which offered him as a defensive back. Boston College and West Virginia also expressed interest in Kinnard as a slot receiver.

Should things not pan at quarterback for Kinnard at Connecticut, slot is an acceptable alternative.

"They said, 'We're bringing you in to let you play quarterback. The only way you won't play quarterback is if you prove to us that you can't -- then we'll let you play on the offensive side of the ball.' Some of the schools wanted me on defense, but I didn't want to play defense."

Eric Freniere - Springbrook High School

Eric Freniere led his team to a victory in his first game as the new Varsity Sr QB for Springbrook High School in a game against Blake HS -- 36 to 7. It was not much of a passing duel. Springbrook was able to establish the run right up front, so Eric didn't get the opportunity to throw much but he was 3 for 4, one which was a TD and he also threw for a 2 point conversion on that TD. The one incomplete pass was a "throw away" as Eric didn't believe his receiver was open. Eric also ran for 1 TD from the 3rd yd line and had another good run (scramble for about 8-10 yds) for a 1st down when a passing play broke down. He also is his team's punter and punted twice for an avg of 45 yards.
