A queen bee is essential for the survival of a honey bee hive. Learn how to identify this important insect from a series of queen bee videos.

The Queen Bee

The queen bee takes on an essential role in a hive as it's one source of new bees. after a single mating with a drone bee the queen is set for a lifetime of egg laying.

Queen bees are cared for by worker bees which prepare a special food for her which is known as royal jelly.

A queen bee will form her hive in any suitable hollow space. Large hollow trees can sometimes be found to contain a European bee queen and her hive. It is only the desire for people to collect honey that makes the white box full of frames a must have.

Queen bees can be purchased through mail order or over the internet. They are packaged in a purpose made container that allows them to survive for a long time in transit. The queen bee is packed with a supply of royal jelly and some worker bees to feed her.

Inside The Bee Hive

When the honey is removed it does not affect the Queen. Her brood comb is placed maintained by the worker bees in a separate part of the hive from the food.

Bees and Honey

Did you know that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination and most of this is accomplished by Bees? Join us as we visit a Sonoma County Beekeeper and honey producer, Arrowsmith Farms. We take an exciting look into a bee hive to learn how a bee colony evolves and how honey is produced. An interesting fact is that a honeybee queen may lay 2000 eggs per day during spring buildup, but she also must lay 1000-1500 eggs per day during the foraging season, simply to replace the casualties. Talking about being, Busy as a Bee! Be sure to visit Arrowsmith Farms' booth at both the Marin and Sonoma Farmer's markets.
