Fantastical themes, a trend that would continue throughout their future albums, is on display here, creating a unique and somewhat strange album, even for Queen.
Seven Seas of Rhye went through another incarnation. Also, the album was split between a light and dark side. The iconic dark side, often associated with Bohemian Rhapsody, predates that song by two albums.

Building on their commercial success both home and abroad of Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera hit the top of the charts for 4 weeks in 1975, and hit #4 in the U.S. The album is a mix of rock opera classics like Bohemian Rhapsody and stately, almost bucolic tunes such as Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and Good Company. A Night at the Opera is considered Queen's most technically excellent album, comparable to The Beatles' White Album or The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.
As is common with most of Queen's work, this album is filled with complex riffs, multiple track recordings, innovative use of sound and quality songwriting by all four members.
It is also the first introduction to the band's outro version of God Save the Queen, beautifully rendered by Brian May.

The album begins with the same strains that end with Teo Torriatte, creating a circular effect, allowing the CD on repeat to appear to go on forever.

8. "Sleeping on the Sidewalk"
9. "Who Needs You"
10. "It's Late"
11. "My Melancholy Blues"
Queen's Sixth Album was much more subtle with it's complex orchestrations and use of multiple tracks, which met with some critical abuse upon first being released, but it didn't stop it from going multiple platinum around the world.
More significantly, this album unleashed "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" upon the world, making it a favorite in stadiums (being rocked by Queen and by sports teams alike) for decades to come, even today.
News of the World also includes funky tracks like "Fight from the Inside" and "Get Down, Make Love", as well as Sheer Heart Attack, a throwback to their roots for the song that didn't make the album of the same name.

This is just a great album, with a lot of great songs on it. At release, critics were lukewarm, but have warmed up significantly over time. And why not with favorites like Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race and Queen's personal favorite, Don't Stop Me Now. There are other hidden gems like Let Me Entertain You, Dead on Time and Fun It. This is just one of those whimsical and fun Queen albums that is great for working out, background music or driving.
Highly underrated, but complete with great songs, even if the album itself doesn't flow like some others.

The Game shows 80s pop influence with songs like Rock It and Rockabilly sensibilities with Crazy Little Thing Called Love, while maintaining their fantasy history with Dragon Attack and their classic sound with songs like Sail Away Sweet Sister and Play the Game. This album debuts Another One Bites the Dust, the most popular track from this album, charged with backmasking controversy.

Hot Space - Queen's "Dance" Album
Release Date: 1982Title: Hot Space
1. "Staying Power"
2. "Dancer"
3. "Back Chat"
4. "Body Language"
5. "Action This Day"
6. "Put Out the Fire"
7. "Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)"
8. "Calling All Girls"
9. "Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love)"
10. "Cool Cat"
11. "Under Pressure"
Now experimenting with synthesizers, which they had done little of in the past, Queen created an album heavy with pop, dance and R&B influence, a major departure from their already eclectic style. Although passed on by most Queen faithful, it does feature a couple staples - Body Language, the David Bowie collaboration Under Pressure and Life is Real, a tribute to the recently murdered John Lennon.

The Works - Queen's Tenth Album
Release Date: 1984Title: The Works
1. "Radio Ga Ga"
2. "Tear It Up"
3. "It's a Hard Life"
4. "Man on the Prowl"
5. "Machines (Or 'Back to Humans')"
6. "I Want to Break Free"
7. "Keep Passing the Open Windows"
8. "Hammer to Fall"
9. "Is This the World We Created...?"
10. "I Go Crazy"
After the departure that was Hot Space and a brief period of separation for solo work and collaboration away from Queen, the band returned to a more traditional Rock sound that featured hits like Radio Ga Ga, I Want to Break Free and Hammer to Fall, and included rockabilly in Man on the Prowl and operatic ballads like It's a Hard Life.
Queen CDs - The Works
Includes bonus remixes of Radio Ga Ga and I Want To Break Free
A Kind of Magic - "The Soundtrack"
Release Date: 1986Title: A Kind of Magic
1. "One Vision"
2. "A Kind of Magic"
3. "One Year of Love"
4. "Pain Is So Close to Pleasure"
5. "Friends Will Be Friends"
6. "Who Wants to Live Forever"
7. "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)"
8. "Don't Lose Your Head"
9. "Princes of the Universe"
Not officially created as the soundtrack for the movie Highlander, six of the songs on the album appear in the movie and give a good movie a tremendous lift. This album is one of my favorites, as almost every song is a classic, invoking imagery from the movie or just simply as a Queen concert staple. One Vision, a Kind of Magic, One Year of Love, Friends Will Be Friends and Who Wants to Live Forever are reason enough to get the album, but stick around for the bombastic awesomeness that is Gimme the Prize and Princes of the Universe. A great album, and one of the most thematically complete.

The Miracle - The "Invisible" Album
Release Date: 1989Title: The Miracle
1. Party
2. Khashoggi's Ship
3. The Miracle
4. I Want It All
5. The Invisible Man
6. Breakthru
7. Rain Must Fall
8. Scandal
9. My Baby Does Me
10. Was It All Worth It
11. Hang On In There
12. Chinese Torture
Incorporating heavy synthesizers, which Queen was reluctant to use in the past, The Miracle Album experiments, using music and sound to create moods and to speak in place of and around words. Classics are few and far between, but I Want It All is great, and the title track, The Miracle, is beautiful and their most complex offering on the album. This is the first album that Queen did not tour for, as Freddie Mercury was ailing from complications from HIV. Queen did not publicize their problems, but instead quietly returned to the studio to record their next album.

Innuendo - The Masterpiece and the Goodbye
Release Date: 1991Title: Innuendo
1 Innuendo
2 I'm Going Slightly Mad
3 Headlong
4 I Can't Live with You
5 Don't Try So Hard
6 Ride the Wild Wind
7 All God's People
8 These Are the Days of Our Lives
9 Delilah
10 The Hitman
11 Bijou
12 The Show Must Go On
Suffering from complications due to HIV/AIDS, Freddie Mercury soldiered on and Queen produced perhaps their finest album ever. Darkly themed and ominously foreshadowing the illness that Mercury denied at every opportunity, Innuendo is classic Queen, with complex riffs and musical progressions, multi-part tracks, brilliant production and excellent performances by the entire band, with a mix of hard rock and epic flamboyance.
The album is lead by and personified by its title track, Innuendo, which is as magnificent and complex as Bohemian Rhapsody. Other favorites include I'm Going Slightly Mad, Headlong, These Are the Days of Our Lives, The Hitman, Bijou and The Show Must Go On. Despite the darkness of the album, there is some whimsy, in Delilah, a song about Mercury's cat.
Freddie Mercury died in November of 1991, 10 months after Innuendo was released, and the band was silenced for its longest period to date.

Release Date: 1995Title: Made in Heaven
1. "It's a Beautiful Day"
2. "Made in Heaven"
3. "Let Me Live"
4. "Mother Love"
5. "My Life Has Been Saved"
6. "I Was Born to Love You"
7. "Heaven for Everyone"
8. "Too Much Love Will Kill You"
9. "You Don't Fool Me"
10. "A Winter's Tale"
11. "It's a Beautiful Day (Reprise)"
12. "Yeah"
13. *Untitled Track*
Despite Mercury's death in 1991, Queen went back to the studio armed with old recordings and unfinished songs and created an album with Mercury's vocal and piano tracks and combined them with their own complex vocals and masterful instrumentals. The result is as good as anything they ever produced, and mourning fans ate it up.
And with hits like Made in Heaven, I Was Born to Love You and Let Me Live, Queen was as good as ever, but despite their genius, it would be Queen's last album with Freddie Mercury. Queen would continue to play, write songs and be active in the music community. John Deacon would retire from the band in 1998.
Eventually, Queen joined with Paul Rodgers in the new milllennium to tour again and release an album, The Cosmos Rocks.

- I experienced Queen in a sort of second-hand way, as my brother went through a major Queen phase when we were teens. He had all of the albums up through The Game. Some of their songs are still favorites of mine.
I'm giving this lens an Angel blessing and will feature it on my SquidAngel At Your Service lens. One album that I don't see here, though, is the Flash Gordon soundtrack. I always liked the Wedding March from that one.

- Thanks so much Joan! I was thinking about Flash the whole time with:
Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom
FLASH! Ah-AHHHHHH!
going through my head, so I'll have to add it to the mix. The entire soundtrack was written specifically for the movie, and one song "Flash's Theme" or just "Flash" was released as a single. I have more work to do, and more content is "coming soon".
