The Queen

The Queen Rock Band was founded in 1970 in London, initially there were Brian May, Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor and one year later John Deacon joined the band.

They are considered to be one of the most accomplished and refined rock acts to ever have been on stage.

After the daeth of Freddy Mercury, Paul Rodgers has joined the other members of the Queen and they now have started a 'new' carreer toghether with the new lead singer Paul Rodgers.

Queen - Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 & 2

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. -- Rickey Wright

If you are just itching to dip your feet in the world of Queen, this is definitley the first selection you should buy. It features hits from every single album they've put out save their first (Keep yourself Alive is missing, but it's a minor flaw). Disc one contains tracks that most people should recognize right away, from their most famous (Bohemian Rhapsody) to their biggest chart hits (Crazy Lil Thing Called Love, Another One Bites the Dust) to their early hits (Killer Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye). This is the disc most people will turn to first and more often, but there's so much more..

Disc 2 is the real treasure here. The only song most people in the US will know is 'Under Pressure' and possibly 'Radio Ga-Ga'. But disc 2 captures Queen at their greatest, in my opinion. Their early days were fun, yes, but their later days found Queen simply getting better and better, most notably Brain May, his guitar work is light-years ahead of his early material. Songs like 'I want it All' and 'The Invisible Man' demonstrate just what a fantastic axeman this guy was (as opposed to the effects-wizard of his early years). 'Innuendo' shows that Queen still feels that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' vibe. In short, for people who think Queen vanished after their album 'The Game' (read: people in America) disc 2 is a real eye-opener.

Greatest Hits I and II is bar none, the best introduction to one of the greatest bands in history. Don't bother with the other Hollywood Records slop (Classic Queen, GH, Rocks, etc) unless you just have to have everything. An added bonus are some fantastic liner notes. -- Karl John Krumrey IV (Detroit area, Mi)

Queen Greatest Hits

Queen's Greatest Hits - We Will Rock You Edition (2004.) Queen's classic compilation, revamped and rereleased.

One of the greatest classic rock acts of all time was Queen. With Freddie Mercury's vocal superiority, Brian May's mastery of the guitar, and Roger Taylor's superb drumming, the band won audiences over. Unfortunately, the band's days together were cut tragically short when Mercury died of AIDS on November 24, 1991. But the band's legacy would not be forgotten. Less than a year after his death, a hits compilation was released on CD. Over a decade later, to help commemorate a musical based on the band's work, this new edition of the album was released. Read on for my review of this new edition of the classic compilation.

PROS:
-PRETTY MUCH ALL OF THE BAND'S BIG HITS ARE HERE. You get hits like We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, Another One Bites The Dust, Killer Queen, Somebody To Love, Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race, You're My Best Friend, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and many more!
-UNDERRATED MASTERPIECES ARE ALSO PRESENT. Although the vast majority of this set is devoted to the band's most popular material, there are many little gems that most casual fans have never heard of - and these are all essential listening.
-BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY HAS BEEN ADDED! The band's biggest hit, mysteriously enough, wasn't on the original CD issue of this album. But the new edition corrects that little problem.
-A GREAT VALUE. For a very low price, you get several Queen classics! This only helps to make this compilation ideal to the casual fan.

CONS:
-TOO MANY UNDERRATED TUNES ARE MISSING. Where are Keep Yourself Alive, Great King Rat, the studio version of Tie Your Mother Down, and Stone Cold Crazy? These songs all deserved a place on here.
-THE LIVE CUTS DON'T TOP THE STUDIO ONES. The studio version of Tie Your Mother Down puts the live one to shame, no questions aksed. The same can be said of Under Pressure.

OVERALL:
To put it simply, if you're a casual fan of Queen who doesn't want to get every album, this set makes for an excellent alternative. It's not perfect, but it will be for the band's newbies, most likely. It could have been a better compilation, but still, it's pretty good the way it is.

The Queen - English Rock Band

With Freddie Mercury

Queen were an English rock band formed in 1970 in London by guitarist Brian May, lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, and drummer Roger Taylor, with bassist John Deacon completing the lineup the following year. While it is uncertain how many albums the band has sold, it was estimated at about 190 million, as of early 2008.Queen at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The band is noted for their musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements, vocal harmonies, and incorporation of audience participation into their live performances. Their 1985 Live Aid performance was voted the best live rock performance of all time in an industry poll.

Queen had moderate success in the early 1970s, with the albums Queen and Queen II, but it was with the release of Sheer Heart Attack in 1974 and A Night at the Opera the following year that the band gained international success. They have released fifteen studio albums, five live albums, and numerous compilation albums. Eighteen of these have reached number one on charts around the world.

Following Mercury's death in 1991 and Deacon's retirement in 1995, May and Taylor have performed infrequently under the Queen name. Since 2005 they have been collaborating with Paul Rodgers, under the moniker Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Freddie Mercury Biography

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara; 5 September 1946 ? 24 November 1991) was a Zanzibar-born British musician, best known as the lead singer and co-founder of the rock band Queen (inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001). He was noted for his vocal abilities, his charisma, and his live performances. As a songwriter, he composed many international hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "We Are the Champions" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". In addition to his work with Queen, he also led a solo career with minor success, and was occasionally a producer and guest musician (piano or vocals) for other artists. Mercury, who was of Indian Parsi descent and who grew up in India, has been referred to as "Britain's first Asian rock star." He died of bronchopneumonia induced by HIV (AIDS) on 24 November 1991, only one day after publicly acknowledging he had the disease. In 2006, Time Asia named Mercury as one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years. However, he has also been criticised for having kept his ethnicity, as well as his sexual orientation and HIV status, a secret from the public.

How do I review what isn't here? Strong Queen fans will know all 17 songs. Most of their biggest hits are here. Most. Not all. Not even one of the biggest songs they've ever had.

Even an American Idol contestant knows "Bohemian Rhapsody" is part of the rock-n-roll canon. What was Hollywood Records thinking to leave out such a great hit?

What is here is mostly good. Freddie Mercury's range and dramatic intonations, paired with guitar maestro Brian May's capacity to ignite a note, and songs like "Killer Queen" go from being interesting to incredible.

Part of the problem was Queen. They had too many good hits gracing more than one genre. Most bands wish they had the difficulty of choosing greatest hits choices.

Questionable choices are obvious: "Seven Seas of Rhye" and "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy."

"Seven Seas" has a hard rock, guitar-driven sound but does not meet the usual Queen level of quality.

"Good Old" is a nice demonstration of Freddie Mercury's great voice, but lyrically is weak.

The closest economical solution is to buy instead "Queen - Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 & 2" Get all the songs below except "Keep Yourself Alive." 34 songs in all.

Missing from the play list:
* Bohemian Rhapsody
* Under Pressure
* Tie Your Mother Down
* Keep Yourself Alive
* Radio Ga Ga
