Rania, Queen of Jordan

Queen Rania is the queen consort of Jordan's King Abdullah II, and the mother of Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem.

Formerly Rania Al-Yasin of Kuwait, Rania has a Palestinian heritage. She earned a degree in Business Administration from the American University in Cairo, Egypt, and later, after her marriage, a DEA degree in Management from the HEC University of Geneva in Switzerland.

In January 1993 Rania's life changed when she met the then-Prince Abdullah at a function. They were married just six months later, on 10 June 1993.

From Princess to Queen

Becoming Rania, Queen Consort to the King of Jordan

Rania settled well into her roles as a Princess of Jordan's Hashemite Kingdom, and wife and mother, giving birth to their first child, Prince Hussein, in 1994. Two years later, in 1996, Princess Iman was born.

In 1999, however, their lives shifted into overdrive when King Hussein suddenly changed the succession plan to grant his son, Abdullah, the title of Crown Prince. Up to this time, King Hussein's brother, Hassan, held the role of Crown Prince and successor to the throne.

Crown Prince Abdullah and Crown Princess Rania had just two weeks to get used to their new titles, when their roles changed once again. At the time, King Hussein was being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and died on 7 February 1999, leaving his son as King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and Rania as Queen consort.

In 2000, Princess Salma was born, followed by Prince Hashem in 2005.

I admit I had no idea who was queen of Jordan until I read this lens. Always nice to see some international content, as we are too often insulated from the rest of the world here in the US.

The queen is exceptional. She has the beauty and the brains, the charm and passion like the late Princess Diana. I really admire and adore her. I hope all women leaders in the world will follow her examples. She is a paragon of beauty, excellence and democratic leadership. May she live long and serve her country.
