Quentin Tarantino: Nobody Does It Better . . .

Quentin Terantino has a way of grabbing attention and tempting the psyche through well written stories with plots that have more twists and turns than a ride to Haleakala. Once you are on the road you hold your breath, and before you know it, you realize you've been on the ride of your life without ever leaving your seat.

Quentin Tarantino at a Glance

Quentin Jerome Tarantino (born March 27, 1963) is an Academy Award-, BAFTA Award- and Palme d'Or-winning, Emmy- and Grammy Award-nominated American film director, screenwriter, producer and actor. He rose to fame in the early 1990s as an independent filmmaker whose films used nonlinear storylines and aestheticization of violence. His films include Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill (Vol. 1 2003, Vol. 2 2004) and Death Proof (2007). In 2007, Total Film named him the 12th greatest director of all-time.http://www.totalfilm.com/features/the_greatest_directors_ever_-_part_2

My first moment with Tarantino

Pulp Fiction

I first heard about Quentin Tarantino after Pulp Fiction reached the Oscars. I remember the award show, but the accolades did not interest me. I never thought about seeing Pulp Fiction, knew nothing about the movie, and truly could care less. I was in business with my husband, and had little time for theatrical adventures. TV is my background music of choice, so goes life.

Then in the latter part of '98, I happened to be doing dishes and overheard Neil Diamond's, "Girl" song playing in the background. That was cool. Then, all of a sudden I heard some guy that sounded a lot like John Travolta scream out, "F--- ME!," several times, but not in the Biblical sense.

Now I was really intrigued, and as I walked into the TV room my eyes caught the sight of John Travolta stabbing Uma Thurman in the heart with a needle, who woke up out of an OD state to say, "Something."

My jaw dropped, and there went the hook. This was not just some movie . . . it was really some movie. After that, I waited for the movie to air again so I could see it front to back. And saw it, I did. Again, and again. Too complex to see just once.

Pulp Fiction has an all star cast and plots that twist one after another with each one leading to a crescendo. Fantastic script(s). Great score, great theme, great cult masterpiece. The movie was so good, I recommended it to my husband who hates everything. He loved it so much he had to see it more than once, too.

Quentin Tarantino: Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a 1994 film by director Quentin Tarantino, who co-wrote the film with Roger Avary. A crime drama with a nonlinear storyline, the film is known for its rich, eclectic dialogue, its ironic mix of humor and violence, and its host of cinematic and pop culture references. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture; Tarantino and Avary won for Best Original Screenplay. It was also awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. A major commercial success, it revitalized the career of its leading man, John Travolta, who received an Academy Award nomination, as did co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

The film's title refers to the pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-20th century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue. Pulp Fiction is self-referential from its opening moments, beginning with a title card that gives two dictionary definitions of "pulp". The plot, in keeping with most of Tarantino's other works, is presented out of chronological sequence. The picture's self-reflexivity, unconventional structure, and extensive use of homage and pastiche have led critics to describe it as a prime example of postmodern film. Pulp Fiction is viewed as the inspiration for many later movies that adopted various elements of its style. The nature of its development, marketing, and distribution and its consequent profitability had a sweeping effect on the field of independent cinema. A cultural watershed, Pulp Fiction's influence has been felt in several other popular media.

Quentin Tarantino: Kill Bill

Tricks are for kids . . .

Kill Bill is the fourth film by writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Originally conceived as one film, it was released in two separate volumes (in late 2003 and early 2004) due to its running time of approximately four hours. The movie is an epic-length revenge drama, with homages to earlier film genres, such as Hong Kong martial arts movies, Japanese samurai movies and Italian spaghetti westerns; an extensive use of popular music and pop culture references; and deliberate over-the-top violence. The two-parts film was filmed in California, Texas, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and parts of Mexico.
