An Introduction to
Hipkin's Hip Shots

My blog about business and marketing strategy

Hipkin's Hip Shots

Business is hard, and sensible business and marketing advice is hard to find. Sure, there are lots of blogs, lenses, articles and opinions, but where is the practical advice, advice based on real-world experience, that's applicable to your business today?

I started writing Hipkin's Hip Shots as my small attempt to make sensible business and marketing strategy advice available to the leaders of businesses, large and small, trying to survive and, in fact, prosper in today's reality. I draw on decades of experience and a deep understanding of business, especially marketing, customer relationship marketing and advertising, to write about the practical ways you and your business can be more successful.

The posts are short and focused on specific problems and opportunities. Each post concludes with a series of Hip Shots or quick tips for business success that you can use as you manage your own business.

Business Review, featured below, Is an example of the approach you will find in the blog. In this article I share my approach to assessing a business' past performance as the first step to a more effective business and marketing plan. You will find the Business Review Questions, in presentation format, so you can use them to develop your own business or marketing plan.

These are difficult times so I've included another example from Hipkin's Hip Shots, a series of posts on Marketing in a Challenging Economy, that describe some of the things you can do to prosper in this tough economy. Read the beginning of each post and, if you are intrigued, follow the provided link to the blog to read the rest.

Finally, if you read on, you can review the three Most Recent Quick Tips from Hipkin's Hip Shots and, if you like what you see, click through to enjoy the whole article.

And don't forget to rate this lens so others can be successful too.

Business Review

Looking back helps plan forward

An often overlooked part of the business planning process is the business review. Before you dive into financial planning, step back and considering what's happened in the last year, and document the resulting insights.

The Business Review process doesn't have to be hard. A simple question and answer format works just fine. You can use the following presentation as a starting point for your analysis.

As you work through the questions here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Keep it short. Responses should take no more than 10 seconds to read; 5 seconds is even better.

  • Keep it focused. Ensure that each response is focused on what's important. Keeping them short helps, but be super critical, "Does this really matter?"

  • Review for inconsistencies. Watch out for statements later in the analysis that are dissonant with what you said earlier.

  • Don't work alone. Ask a friend or colleague who is familiar with your business to review the analysis and challenge you on your conclusions. Do the same with someone you respect who isn't familiar with your business.

The business review analysis is your opportunity to look back at what's happened. This will help you build a more powerful and effective plan for the future.
